Gunning For- Unusual markings on shoulder....

Postby Alibhai's Alibar » Tue Jul 05, 2005 10:28 pm

Any idea what these markings are? They look more like some sort of trauma than markings from birth- thoughts?

R U sure that isn't just a light reflection in the picture? I was sure I'd seen this horse run b4 and don't remember any "spots". I usually pay attention to ones by Dove Hunt.

Very odd. Can you rule out trauma?

If not the only thing that comes to mind is the kind of white markings that Catch a Bird has--this is the Australian stallion that seems to be throwing true roans.

Could be scaring from a skin rash.

Wow, makes me think of a famous skin disease.

I saw Gunning For Up close and personal. I thought he had a skin disease
at first. Now I don't know what to think.

Very strange marking( if thats what they are). very odd.

Since they are pink after the exertion of racing, I wonder if they are hairless areas. Hopefully not from a chemical accident.

That's definitely bare skin. Looks like a rash to me - in some of the pictures, it looks like there are also some raised bumps that didn't lose the hair, on his neck and chest.

Maybe he was itching himself on the stall guard, or something, which caused the hair loss. Of course he would do that just before a big race! What horse wouldn't?

The skin's a nice healthy pink and will probably heal right up, but if the hair comes back in white....then he'll have some shoulder markings to talk about.

Ithink this is a chemical burn. If it was a marking it wouldn't be naked :!:

I don't think it's bare skin. Look at all of the photos and you can tell it's white hair on top of pink skin, in the last photo the hair is wet and you can see through it to the skin below. He also looks like he has a few spots further along his flank, withers and down both legs as well. I sure wish someone who knows this horse would chip in some details.

I was really excited about this too, and thought it was some kind of Pelouse's Queen-type crop out, but I found an earlier picture of Gunning For with no white whatsoever on the shoulder. Must be some kind of skin rash, possibly a chemical burn. It would be a really weird pattern if it were scarring from some physical trauma. On a related note, I have seen pictures of Hosco with similar white spots on his shoulder, less round. Does anyone know what's up with that? I think it's some kind of rash, because in some pictures he has it, and in others he doesn't. Maybe Gunning For is afflicted by something similar?
