I read this earlier today and unfortunately, for those rescues that do NOT keep some kind of 'strings' attached, this can and does happen. I'd be interested in knowing the REAL story, has he REALLY been euthanized or swiftly toted off the backside for some other fate?
I would imagine by the approach (protest/letters/calls to the steward, etc.,) that the trainer was NOT a happy camper over the entire situation. I suspect that had the approach been done differently there may have been some cooperation by those involved w/the horse and possibly, a better ending.
Getting back to the flipside of the how's/why's this horse returned to racing, it's of the utmost importance to thoroughly read the guidelines of any rescue and what their policies are in the adoption process, ie; full conveyance of the animal to an adoptor? (NOT GOOD) The right to sell/convey to another (some will insist on a set period of time, however, some horses even after 1-2 yrs., may still end up BACK in a dire situation).
The best possible adoption policies associated with any rescue is to keep strings attached by provisions written in the contract. There are many that don't and it's in reading the 'fine print' that causes these situations to occur. Very unfortunate for the horse as most often they pay the price with their life......

Sad to read this story as I used to groom First Stringer years ago when he was a 3 year old at Hastings Park.I have a seemingly hard time believing alot of what I read on both of the forums that were linked to above.I dont know how devious or wrong this situation really is.While looking after First Stringer he had just came back from Colic Surgery.He suffered from Colic many times due to the fact he was a terrible cribber even with a collar on.I think that it is admirable for the people who wanted to save this horse but i also know that alot of what was posted was BS and pretty pony gals were making stuff up to make this story sound alot more dramatic.
