joint supplements

Postby sstacy19 » Mon Aug 15, 2005 3:58 pm

ok I know that this is the wrong forum, but it is "general" I am going to start riding my stallion George this week, I just moved him to a barn with an indoor and I can't wait!!!
He is very sound now...but... he did race 73 times (till age 8 and he is now 9), and has big ankles (but not as big as they were when I got him).
I want to find the BEST supplement for his joints so that he continues to be happy even while working, I hate to waste his movement and talent. Thanks!!

Also, does anyone know the best way to help tendons heal? It is not bowed but would of been if my gelding didn't stop working. He is on stall rest now and has been sound the whole time. THanks!

I used Fluid Flex on my crazy Future Storm mare that had a really busted up knee. MSU x-rayed it for me and said how can she even walk on it... ?
but the fluid flex really seemed to help her alot!
Its great stuff.. one $24.95 bottle lasts about a month

My recommendation- Recovery EQ

Great stuff and it's not just for joints! Used on a real hurting unit several years ago, poor fella could hardly walk off the trailer and over the course of 6 weeks, he was like a different horse. He also suffered some knee soreness. I highly recommend it!

I second the Recovery Eq, it's really good!! Another one I would love to try but it is so expensive is called Rapid Response.

Hyaluronic Acid and MSM are great for inflamed joints.

For tendons leg paint---ice---and time does wonders.

Tendons

Postby madelyn » Tue Aug 16, 2005 8:58 am

It is a slow process but they can come out nearly like new... In the morning, rub on alcohol and wrap for exercise. Walk the horse. Take off the wrap and hose with very cold water. Apply Sure-Tight liniment. Repeat daily, moving up to a jog when it shows sign of improvement.

Stacy I really like Fluid Flex but take if you go that route take him off the Fluid Flex about 6 weeks before you want to use him as a breeding stallion. The manufacturers say that there is no problem giving Fluid Flex to breeding stallions but I honestly thought I had a gelding when I had a stallion on it. I have since switched him to Fortifier from Fastrack which is all natural but expensive.

Gerry if that is the case then both of my studs are going on fluid flex!
Just kidding.. I could really use the one (Double Deposit) to act like a gelding though!

Karie,

It really did that to Rocky. You couldnt see or feel anything....just as though he had been gelded. After I took him off the Fluid Flex, he dropped one and then the other. I contacted the manufacturer and they said they had never heard of that happening. I really thought maybe when I had gotten Rocky he was gelded and I had never noticed!!!

I hadnt thought of it but maybe I should give some to Maracaibo to see if it "calms" him down.

I have been very happy with HylaSport - plentiful combination of glucosamine, MSM, and HA. You can get it fairly inexpensively through Smartpak. Good luck with your boy!

Grand Flex by Grand Meadows is very good for joints. I get Grand Flex and Grand Hoof in Smart Paks.
