Meat Horse to Allowance Horse

Postby griff » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:04 pm

Last February my friend, Lucy Webb, a trainer in Maryland, bought a mare named Totally Selfish from a meat buyer for $950. She was told the mare was healthy but it came down with a case of strangles after it arrived at her barn

Lucy and a friend, Angela Price [age 77] nursed the mare back to health and got it fit enough to start training. The mare had not raced in over 2 years; however on 08/13/2005 she ran and won a $28k allowace race at Pimilco by 5 3/4 lengths [0813053PIM yl ffY], Next she ran and won a $30k allowance race at Pimlico on 08/26/2005 [0826053PIM fm5fT].

Wait, there's more. The jockey that is riding for Lucy could hardly get a mount 4 year ago at Penn National and the Exercise Rider that came to Lucy's farm to get Totally Selfish race fit was recovering from a knee injury that had left him bedridden for 6 months and no one would let him gallop a horse at the track.

So Lucy not only rescued Totally Selfish from the slaughter house, she also rescued a jockey and an exercise rider.

Seems like there is a stury worth publishing here somewhere, maybe even a movie. hell the ending is better than Black Beauty and it's real.

Griff, you are right, it is a great story - right down to the name of the mare!

I notice she's from my favorite female family, 4-r. Thank you for sharing it.

I am glad to hear the mare is well. I have her on my stable alert and just figured dhe had retired to breeding then she showed up again after all this time. Hope my Abaginone filly pops back onto the radar soon too!

NYBreeder

The mare is NY bred and ran in NY. Lucy says her problem up there was they were holding her back at the start and trying to make her into a miler and she's a natural born sprinter.

Lucy also says she comes out ot the gate like a QH and with no constrints is running level. You got to catch her to beat her.

I still say this is good stuff for a made for TV movie. How can we get those guys to look at this true to life fairy tale come true?.

Griff--
The filly I bred (also NY Bred) is the same way, takes the lead right off and has to be caught. She broke her maiden first time out. She has changed hands three times since.

Wonder what happened to Abaginone? Last I heard he had been sold to Mexico and has not been heard from since.

The truly sad part of this story is the reason Lucy contacted the dealer in the first place. She was helping me search for 6 mares that were left over as no bids from the mixed sale in Timonium. There were 18 in total that needed somewhere to go. We got them all placed including these 6 that were supposed to go to TRF. I saw the stable releases filled out with TRF as the destination personally. A high up person who will not be named gave/sold? those horses to a dealer and they were never to be seen from again.
In my efforts to locate these mares I ended up saving Little Me Too from the kill pen. I bought his mother a few years ago specifically because she produced him. When I saw the name on the papers I couldn't let him stay there so he came home with me. He was eventually gelded and sent directly to TRF bypassing the person who will not be named.
We may not have been able to save those six lost mares but here are two that were saved in their honor.

wow that is a crazy story! As some of you already know from past posts, my meat horse went on to be an allowance horse as well...hee hee even if it is in 2 furlong races!! Hey he found his niche.
his trainer took him to the meat man because he had strangles, I went there and bought him back for $450, he didn't have stragles and was sorta sold to another trainer who turned him into a winner his first race out! I think at 5 furlongs. Now he runs in Allowance races at 2 furlongs..yeah no can of Dog food can for my boy Swift mover!

Ahhh, Laurieace!

Yep, still have the identification info on those 6 mares, including the tattoo info..

That ENTIRE situation STUNK, BIG TIME!!!

Ahhh, the lovely big time breeders and industry employees - NOT!

I don't think I'll ever forget *that* week... they're gone, but not forgotten.... nor my views of what takes place.

You are right Marli, that week sucked, but its nice to know that something good came out of it. Even if it was indirectly. We can't save them all, but we sure saved those two! Its like the story of the little girl on the beach throwing back the starfish....
