FEAR

Postby OTTBeventing » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:50 am

You guys have been so great and I apologize if asking questions regarding no racing OTTB is not cool here and if so I will not ask again.

I have a gelding I also really like named FEAR

By French Deputy out of Fortissima

Anyhow since I am not a guru on TB breeding but a group of us are trying to put together groups of OTTB that are excellent eventing lines.

thanks

I'm not sure what you meant by the beginning of your post, but I for one am very interested in lines that produce good sport horses. I don't know much about breeding and lines, but appreciate good sport horse conformation when I see it. I have always been under the impression that many TB breeders on this forum either are breeding for sport horses or recognize sport horse talent/conformation in the runners they have bred and either cross train or nudge their youngsters into a new carreer as an OTTB if they would be good at it. Anyway, Cheers,

I have been thinking about this a lot lately in regards to Indy Mood. His oldest crop are 5 YOs this year, and several are now involved in "2nd careers." I have heard over and over from several people, including Indy Mood's previous owners who track the babies they bred, bloodstock agents, and owners/breeders who have contacted me because we now own him, that his babies are doing very well in these areas. I know several of them have gone straight into the H/J or eventing world without ever seeing a racetrack, but there are also several now going into these areas who have been racing. I am always hearing about how well put together and nice looking his babies are, which is a big plus for any kind of show ring. Also, the two areas that people seem to be the most impressed in as a general rule with his offspring besides "good looks" are atheleticism and attitude (quick learners and easy to train.)

After hearing this a few times, I started thinking about reaching out to the H/J, eventing, etc. crowd, but as time has gone by and I keep hearing more and more, I've become very intrigued with the idea. I am currently talking to a trainer about taking one of ours who we have retired from racing; she's very excited about the prospect of training this horse in dressage because she has recently started training another Indy Mood baby and absolutely loves the horse. Another trainer got on ours to evaluate him just a couple of days ago and had nothing but glowing things to say about him (again commenting on athleticism and attitude.)

As for bloodlines, I don't know which blood it is that's coming through and showing itself here, or if it's the specific combination in Indy Mood, but I'd be interested to hear if other A.P. Indy or In Reality horses are having success in these disciplines. Indy Mood "measures" the same as his sire, so maybe it's that blood coming through??? I don't know.

As Indy Mood's crops get older and more of them get trained at higher levels and compete in disciplines other than racing, it will be very interesting to see if they continue to have increased success at what they do. I'm encouraged by the amount of good things that I've heard considering he doesn't have all that many babies out there, and they aren't very old yet. There's plenty of room for improvement, and I'm hoping the good news just grows from here.
