Yeah apparently the vultures are circling. Anybody wanna go to a baseball game at Hialeah?
Landfills, baseball stadiums...ok I don't happen to have a sentimental attachment to Gulfstream so how about we put a stadium there instead. Then we can race at Hialeah without race date interference.

Stronach---
Sunshine Millions Gulfstream before renovation=25,000 patrons, $2.4 Million wagered. (2004)
After casino renovation=8,440 patrons, $1.5 million wagered. How many of the 8,440 present actually found it possible to see the races live?

I'll stick with Gulfstream thanks. The location is great, the renovations are beautiful. I'm sure that as soon as the casino is installed more and more people will go. Also its in a great neighbourhood.
I won't want to see a landfill go in Hialeah. I would prefer to see the Marlin's go there instead.

From the 1930's through the 1970's Hialeah Park was instrumental in development of Thoroughbred champions. It was to racing what Wrigley Field is to baseball - a storied and beautiful venue whose flaws have been embraced. - Homestrech by Nancy Stout
Milestones
First turf racing in the United States
47' The Hialeah Bill passes state legislature, giving the track a midwinter racing-date monopoly that will last until 72'
48' Citation wins the Flamingo Stakes
64' Northern Dancer wins the Flamingo Stakes
66' Buckpasser wins the Flamingo Stakes
Joseph Widner, the owner of Hialeah when the Hialeah Bill passed state legislature giving Hialeah the midwinter monoply. Joseph Widner was the person who fought to bring New York Racing back to glory and did so with the help of Governor Roosevelt.
I do not support the destruction of Hialeah for a baseball facility or anything else for that matter. Racing is the oldest sport in this country and should be treated with a bit more care. I know the world turns and we must accept that things will constantly change. Today people would rather sit in front of a slot machine than learn to read The Racing Form, but I believe the beauty of the game and the wanting purity of the horse will prevail. Places that have historical significance, like Hialeah, should be resurrected or at least left untouched.

Amen.
I don't care how nice Gulfstream is, as historic as Hialeah it ain't. Besides you can keep it around, just don't ruin the "Wrigley Field" of horse racing (nice one--good reference) to do it. What if someone wanted to put a new baseball stadium over Saratoga for pete's sake. Or Santa Anita. They won't cuz those places have support of the right people. Clearly things don't always stay that way--see Hollywood Park and the current forlorn state of Pimlico. Vanderbilt would be rolling in his grave to see what they did to what he'd worked so hard to build up. Why do you think Seabiscuit and War Admiral raced there? Hialeah used to have people backing it and it used to have enough people who didn't "matter" financially but sure loved the old place. You wanna talk classy places in this sport, that's one of em.
It's just so frustrating not to have the wealth and influence to do to it what's necessary to bring back the glory days. The right person could do it. Same with Pimlico if legislators would get their act together.
