This Business can be so Heartbreaking

Postby madelyn » Fri Mar 03, 2006 4:12 pm

Our lovely mare, Schwank, who foaled that big beautiful colt on Feb 28th, died around noon today. She was off, sweaty and a bit colicky last night (around 12:30) so she had 1000 lb Banamine, walked, seemed much better. This morning at 6 standing rock still, listless over her foal.. at 10 down and in pain, and around noon died. Vet said not much she could have done even if she had been here, once they start like that it's over. She thinks the mare hemorrhaged. Very odd. But now I have a 3-day old orphan on milk replacer. Buckeye Mares Milk Plus is what was recommended. Only took him a couple of minutes to figure out how to drink it out of a bucket.

I think now we will have to call him Schwank's Last Trick.

Oh my Madelyn. I am so sorry. At least you have a lovely colt to remember her by.

Oh, no. Schwank was such a favorite of yours too. Hope the little one thrives and does his mama proud.

I am sorry to hear the news of your mare's death. I had a similar experience when I lost my mare, Gallant Heiress (Feeling Gallant x Pocasset) in 2004. She left a 5 day old colt that I also started out on the bucket feeding. It is hard work, but I was lucky. My vet knew of a little paint mare that lost her foal. We were able to get them together, and she was a wonderful foster mother. He is now a big strong two year old, named Feeling Fortunate. I hope you can be as fortunate and find a nurse mare. Those feedings every few hours catch up with you pretty quickly.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I know it's pretty easy to find nurse mares in Lexington this time of year. Maybe you want to consider something like that for your foal?

I'm so sorry Madelyn! I hope your dear boy does his mama proud. Please keep us updated on how he's doing. They're so fragile and yet so strong. After doing all you can sometimes what's left is just to love as hard as you are able. I'm sure we'll all pray for his future and you in your time of sadness.

About Schwank's Last Trick, you'd have to merge it together as Schwank'slasttrick or it'd be too long. Lovely idea though and if you do that it'll be very touching. I tried looking up stuff like Her Last Trick or Lady's Last Trick but it occurred to me the Jockey Club might try to get their mind in the gutter and be mean and not let you. Philistines. :?

Ohh, Madelyn - My good thoughts your way and also to our majestic 4 legged friends. Life is very fragile... hope you bounce back real soon for the sake of your other mares and upcoming foals.

I'm so sorry for your loss Madelyn. A good friend of mine just lost her mare the other day. Lost the foal too. Prayers for your little guy. And hugs to you.

hi madelyn

Heartbreaking I'm sure...I know you'll keep your chin up and move forward though. Lots to look forward to with Rocking Trick.

Is there a nursemare on the horizon...for kid Schwank?

Best to you.

Respectfully

Madelyn,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know just how difficult it is raising a bucket baby. But the buckeye milk is great stuff..also get the foal starter pellets too.
