A good fly reppelent...Anyone?

Postby trackgal » Sun Mar 05, 2006 4:36 pm

I've heard that galic, or a cup of vineger in your horses feed helps as a "natural" fly reppelent, supposed to work through their skin, has anyone ever tried this? We live near alot of ponds and boggy land, and the bugs are brutal during the summer, does anyone know of a good bug spray or some other "concoction" that works well?
Thanks,

Louis could give you a natural remedy...

I use Farnam's Tri Tec 14 spray (grey bottle). Isn't the cheapest, but seems to work well for me and I don't have to use as much. (my Morgan is sensitive to some sprays & breaks out). I also use fly masks during black fly season, as they are the biggest nuisance.

the tritech is good, use it for the really bad days, before a rain. I use Zonk it on routine sprayings; it is does a nice job for the money, but you have to brush in and get a nice residual for it to be effective. So, its cheaper but you need more of it more often.

couple of odd ball suggestions.

Dusk to dawn light if feasible: draws whiporwills and bats.

bat boxes even if you dont have a light.

Two suggestions for mossies.

Lavender, wash with it.
Vitmain B complex, the other side effect is if you have a few drinks too many the hangover won't be so bad.

Hang some Basil, Rosemary, or Tansy dried or not in your TB stall.

Use Pennyroyal oil in your TB bath water and the flies and mites will take a hike.

Pennyroyal oil.. can be dangerous with pregnant mares, I believe.

Here are some recipes...:

The other thing to do is hit the population hard in the spring. Hang up those smelly fly catching bags. Spay, get chickens to go through the manure piles.

You want to kill as many of those happy early breeding flys as possible. Once the population has had a chance to get established it is much harder to control. If you have the space, try getting a batch of guinea hens. They are great insect eaters, and pretty smart about not getting eaten themselves. A friend in the middle of tick country swears by them. The keep the tick population down, and roost in the trees at night.
