DNA question
This is probably a stupid question, but can a horse be DNA tested to see if is a thoroughbred? Thanks M>

Thank you very much. Now I can find out if my mare has Thoroughbred in her. She is reg. half Thoroughbred, but she does not show it at all. I bought her from Ontario, unseen, she was purchased as 15.2hh and she arrived here and was only14.1 and half hh. and you can't see any thor. in her at all. Not sure what I can do about it, It has been too long already, 6 mth, so I am sure nothing, just like beating myself up about it, I guess.LOL
I have never heard of a registry for half Thoroughbreds. Is that strictly a Canadian thing? Since you have a pedigree, you would have parentage, and know which parent is a TB -- that MAY be able to be verified by DNA.

Sorry I should correct that. She is reg. half Connemara, and on the reg. paper, the dam, Battle Song is written as a Thoroughbred and that is all the information I have on her, I don't even know where she is, the previous owner is not answering my email and am wondering if I have any grounds to go back on her for compensation. I don't really want to do that, but I feel really snubbed. I actually suspect that the dam was Arab, but I probably can't prove it. This is the slowest moving, shortest-strided, Con.X Thor, in the world I am sure, I don't even think she would move like that being Arab X Con, I really don't know what she is,whatever it is, it is NOT thor.

pretty, was the mare advertised as being out of a registered TB? i would imagine that if you bought the mare, knowing that she was out of an unregistered mare, then you'd have no real recourse. of course, you might have something on the size discrepency, but i'm no lawyer. and considering how poorly i've seen some TB's go (not to mention some Connemara's!), there's always a chance that she IS half TB. and some arabs move very well indeed, so the mare's way of going might not be any sort of indicator of breed.

Battle Song shows up on the pedigree query on this site as a 1984 model. This should give you some place to start getting answers.

Pretty,
Per the '05 APR the most likely candidate for your mare's dam, if she was actually a reg. TB, is Battle Song (1984blkf x Jihad - Sail Song x Sail On-Sail On). There's also a 1949(GB) x Combat - Exaltation x Tetratema, but unless your mare's pretty old, this probably wasn't her dam. Neither Battle Song had any registered TB produce in North America as of '05 or Europe as of '00. There's also an ARG-bred mare named Battle Song in the db.

Pretty - can you please send me an email? A very good freind of mine owns one of Battle Song's offspring, and I think another one still lives just up the road from me.
Oh this is such a busy forum, I love it here. Thanks for all the comments.
Also, Timex.LOL. Quote"so the mare's way of going might not be any sort of indicator of breed." you are right, I am probably just jumping to conclusion, being that they told me such a big false statement. I begin to question everything they told me.
The Dam was reg. thor. so I was told, so it must be Battle Song 1984, the mare I bought is 5 yrs old, so I can't imagine the mother would be too much older. I will contact you Galileo about her, thanks.
Anyhow, I probably won't do anything now, it just makes a person feel bad, especially where I invested all I could financially to buy that special horse for me and it turns out to be a pony. Oh well, live and learn! I just which learning wasn't so darn expensive.

Oh Pretty, I can just IMAGINE your disappointment... and yes, learning is expensive. Did you have the horse vetted? Just a thought for the future, a prepurchase vet exam is pretty inexpensive ($100?) and you can ask the vet, while there, to check things like age and height. People can also make mistakes with regard to age.
On the bright side, a really nicely trained pony that can be certified as a for the hunter ring can be worth a great deal. You could think about putting some time into your mare and possibly reselling her for a profit!![/img]
