Claiming nightmare

Postby DEACON » Mon Feb 01, 2010 11:22 pm

We have just had a claiming nightmare to remember for years to come. A group of friends did a partnership claim recently on a filly that had been very competitive in the level she was running. When race day came we dropped on her and she broke down. She did not finish the race and had to be vaned off.The sad part was this claim was my wife's first and this happened. I can get pass it but hated for this for the wife.So we get to pay for the claim along with the vet bill.

That is too bad. I have never seen that happen myself, though someone did claim a three year old from us whose future earnings were all as a Children's Hunter ;). It must be so awful to be excited to get a new filly, and have that happen. Hopefully, your wife is not totally turned off, will realize that is quite rare, and will have used up all her bad luck.

i think i know the track and the horse.

Just one question-Why would you claim off a top trainer like that?

Check with your track - claims insurance should be available for about 5-7% of the purchase price. Last time I insured a claim that way the insurance was good for anything causing death for a full year - not just during a race.

So sorry your wife and her partners entered the owners ranks in this fashion. My condolences.

This was not our first claim we did. We have did (5)in the last year with good sucess. This was the first experience of a breakdown before even getting her to the barn.I have learn to take the good with the bad and move on.We were blessed with a $7500.00 claimer that we made $60,000.00 with.I have only been doing this two years and have been blessed. Thanks for all the up lifting replys.

I claimed a horse once for my husband's boss. Filly finished second beaten a nose then broke down after the wire. As if that wasn't bad enough we paid to have the surgery done and she spiraled it the rest of the way up her leg and had to be euthanized after coming out of anesthesia. Thank God I had claiming insurance so we were only out the operation and the sales tax. Definitely wasn't a good introduction to the racing gig for him.
I am sorry for your loss both emotionally and financially.

I look at it know as a paid for lesson. We all sometimes want the quick fix of claim and run.It sometimes pays off waiting on the 2yr old verses getting someone else problems.I must say at this point i have counted my blessings for the other claims that was ok.When a horse is dropped for a price it is for a reason.Lesson learned.

We breed to race and have trainers with clients who want a horse NOW, buy privately from us quite regularly. That way they can vet, watch it go, etc. They might pay more than they could get it if they claimed it from us eventually, or have some type of condition: like pay less now, but part of future earnings if it does really well, but some just hate to claim. I am surprised more new people or trainers short of horses don't do that. ("Every" horse is for sale, and stalls are scarce so it is not like we are selling rejects. There is a great Breeder's Award program here too.)
