Runner collapses in race then jumps in lake to cool off!
I kid you not.......a turf maiden runner in Tampa's 7th race today ,ironically named Shipping News jumped into the infield lake after heatstroking and probably saved himself. Read the chartcaller's comments ,they are in great detail.

(I know, I know everyone calls them marathons now.... Just makes me cringe though)
Signs of the times.
01. Sires get retired earlier from stud duties.
02. Runners are achieving less and less starts.
03. Races are run at shorter distances.
04. Some are suggesting shortening the Belmont Stakes.
and so on!
No wonder 1-3/8 mile is referred to as a "marathon"

I saw Bob Baffert give an ESPN on-camera account of how Point Given once had a slight ailment so they cut back on works and consequently feed; then because he was hungry he broke out of the stall, found food and got into a storage area where he got some chemicals under his hooves, and then reared up and banged his head, cutting his eye and requiring stitches.
Something like that. But there the horse was; stitches over his eye, feet wrapped up and a little sick.
All shouting does is make you lose your voice.

I have #4 from that race, Riverview Road, in my virtual stable and I was looking over the race summary to see why he had finished 7th, and I happened to glance at the next line down's comments:
collapsd, jumpd in lake
The footnotes read:
SHIPPING NEWS was rank early, brushed the rail after six furlongs then was pulled up and collapsed from apparent heat prostration. He was revived and regained his footing at which point he wheeled to the inside and broke through the inner rail. He proceeded to break through the inner rail two other times, going on then back off the course then moved to and jumped into the infield lake. After having a haltered [sic] put on by members of the gate crew, he was removed from the lake and vanned off by horse ambulance.
Hope he recovers, seems to be a clever pony
Race (but not jumping-in-lake) replay here, race 7 on 2/17/11
