Trainer al Zarooni was accompanied to the meeting of the disciplinary panel of the British Horseracing Authority by Godolphin's racing manager, Simon Crisford. After the meeting Crisford told members of the press that "I would like to apologize to Sheikh Mohammed, to all at Godolphin, and to fans of British racing."

Seems to me like Sheikh Mo is the one who should be doing the apologizing.

Crisford is the guy who is charge of the racing stable in Britain. Sheikh Mo is a big-wig in the government of the UAE as well as being hereditary ruler of Dubai (one of the constituent parts of the UAE). When the racing in Dubai is done and the horses move back to Britain (if they ever left), he's not in the stables every day because of his responsibilities at home. Crisford is the one who has the responsibility for overseeing the trainers on his turf. The Sheikh and family just fly in for the big race days and sales.

This article raises the larger specter of the problem

Fact is that the whole racing world (at the top) revolves around ShMos' big time spending - not only what he spends but how that spending inflates prices at the top and the subsequent trickle down effect. If he pulled out (or significantly back) the industry would take a big hit big time. There might be some stallions now standing in Ky that might be looking for new pastures.

It's really sad, actually, and when the integrity is attacked at the top, then it just affirms the public perception that everyone in the business is that way.

Given the embarrassment the proud Sheikh undoubtedly suffered from his previous steroid suspension and his penchant to micromanage, it beggars belief that Al-Zarooni acted without Sheikh Mo's tacit approval. In which case the Sheikh also deserves to be ruled off for eight years.

But there's far too much money at stake for that to ever happen. It's that old "root of all evil" again.

Unfortunately Simon Crisford has acknowledged that the steroid injections given to the Godolphin horses were part of a regimen that banished trainer Al-Zarooni followed while he was in Dubai. Thus the illegal action was indeed being committed under the supposedly ever-watchful eye of the Sheikh.

Another possible ban is unfolding concerning trainer Gerard Butler at Newmarket. He says he believes more than 100 horses have received similar treatments as his 4 horses he is being investigation for. TJ

Hi reenci,
You're right about that. Since Zarooni took all the blame for everything that happened and additionally admits it was he who carried the drugs to Great Britain from Dubai. BHA is certain Sheikh Mo had nothing to do with the incident and they publicly invite Mo to stay in British racing. TJ
