Memories of fatally injured horses

Postby saintlyCZ » Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:39 am

I would like to ask you for little help :-)
Right now we are trying to finish new project for our website. It's called "Fallen heroes" - just a work name, we are going to change it before publishing. But I think it's clear what is it about - horses dead or put down because of injuries sustained during their racing career.
And what you can help with? We completed about 200 names, and probably some more will be added. It's not too much, generally, but enough for the beginning. We suppose that after the project starts, we will try to add another names and I will also turn to PQ forum probably. However, some horses from this list will be only mentioned with basic informations, some will have an own site with something we call "profile". Photo, name, pedigree, date of death and place, and a short article. And that's it. You can imagine what is more "attractive" for readers and fans - only list of races of the horse and some notes, or memories of those who knew the horse? So I would like to ask anybody, who remember any horse who died during his racing career, to write anything - short article, some memories - funny or sad, what the horse meant to you or just some nice RIP...

Bellow is list of horses we plan to make profiles in any case, but there's no problem to add another one. You can mention any horse from any period of racing, from stars like Go For Wand to claimers... Every name and every single word about him is welcomed. We don't want to make a list of deceased horses - we want to show people that these horses will live forever in our minds, no matter what they won or lost, when they lived and where they lived - whether in the US, in South Africa or in Sweden...
So please, don't be affraid of writing absolutely anything - either here, if you would like to share your memories with other members, or send an e-mail to me - [email protected]. Please don't use PM's - by inbox is pretty full and I don't have much time to archive it and clean it.
And by the way - if you have any pictures or photos (also amateur photos, doesn't matter!) we could use on the website (with copyright and name of owner, naturally), they are welcomed too!

Planned horse profiles:
US:
A Huevo, Atswhatimtalknbout, Bevo, Boomzeeboom, Boston Common, Carson Hollow, Cashier's Dream, Dance Daily, Diamond Omi, Dollar Bill, Exogenous, Freedom's Daughter, Grey Comet, Guided Tour, Hal's Hope, Hurricane Bertie, Icecoldbeeratreds, Left Bank, Listen Here, Pohave, Pompeyo, Private Emblem, Puzzlement, Saratoga County, Saskya, Shah Jehan, Sharp Performance, Siphonic, Spook Express, Star Over the Bay, Tempera, Truckle Feature, Warners, What a Song, With a City, Wynn Dot Comma.
other countries:
Best Mate, Blues and Royals, Coshocton, Gypsy King, Hawk Flyer, Highest, Horatio Nelson, Jair du Cochet, Landseer, Majors Cast, Millemix, Mubtaker, Mummify, Snow Ridge

As you see, there are mostly thoroughbreds from last few years there, so I think a lot of people here have something to add. However, we are not going to make "profile" for any horse - what to write to Ruffian :-) But certainly we'll find a way how to add some memories or comments to any horse. The more personal, the better.
Thanks a lot for any help!

I didn't even know about carson Hollow's Death.
I LOVED her.
Of course for her, I'd suggest giving tribute to her unforgettable battle with You in the Test stakes (I think that was the race).
She also made me sit up and take notice of carson City as a sire.

Here is a link to a thread concerning the unfortunate demise of horses on the track. There are other threads with the same subject matter. You should contact the administrator of the site to get to the other threads.

Do fevers, colic, etc count? Dunno that I put them in the "horses dead or put down because of injuries sustained during their racing career" category, otherwise some rephrasing of what criteria is maybe. Since there's not a timeframe that I noticed (correct me if I'm wrong) I assume if they do you'd include Landaluce, the post-mentioned but not listed Go For Wand, and obviously Ruffian. Of course there's Swale.

Another more recent horse is Siphonic.

Another greatly loved British horse who died last year, not exactly on the track but while training, was Rooster Booster.

Anyone have a link to the "candles in the wind" thread from the Thoroughbred Times forum?

Eagle Rise (by Danehill) fell 1 1/2f from home, got up and ran on to the post with a broken left foreleg, in doing so, he broke his shoulder. This race should have been his very last race before retiring to stud (Cologne; Sept. 24th, 2005).

How about Nationalore? A horse with a lot of talent that was horribly mismanaged and run over his head (a non-winner in the Ky Derby, for God's sake), he broke down before he could break his maiden after many starts in stakes races. He deserved to have run against maidens and through his allowance conditions. Then he could have won a small stake for sure.

Yes, he was, thanks for mentioning him. He was a talented horse with an overly ambitious owner/trainer who had a reputation for mismanaging his horses. I often wonder if there should be rules against owners like him? E.g. banning him from owning racehorses?
