Who is the Fairest of Them All?

Postby geowarrior » Sun Apr 29, 2007 5:40 pm

Never mind who is going to win the Derby. Which horse is the best looking/has the best conformation?

My picks (bear in mind my T.V. is a 9 inch model and I watch most of my races on an even smaller internet screen): Nobiz Like Showbiz, Curlin, Hard Spun, Cobalt Blue.

Geo, are you sure that it's your TV that's a 9 inch model?

Anyway, I thought Cowtown Cat was a good looking horse when I saw the Illinois Derby.

I gave my girlfriend a model 10 inch piano. She said, "Now all I need is an 8 inch pianist."

I usually favor a bay over a chestnut, but I vote for Cowtown Cat as well. I haven't seen him in a conformation shot, but he looked great on IL Derby Day.

it's interesting as you get closer to a race how your opinions are affected as the little stuff like this thread starts to come out. u look at Stormello for all his good races, physically in this field he seems a bit second tier. nice horse, but lacking just maybe in scope? should we demand that all derby entries post their best photos so we can compare? i'd have to give a nod to Scat Daddy for pure Derby appearance.

Interesting that few people are picking Street Sense on the basis of looks.

Steve Haskin felt that Any Given Saturday was hands down the best looking of the Pletcher crew.

I saw the two in Tampa, and although Street Sense has been my pick since Day 1, AGS won the beauty contest in the Tampa Derby post parade.

He's a fancy horse, as some would say.

I have not seen Street Sense in person but he does look very well-balanced from the photos and videos that I've seen of him. I'll put him near the top of my beauty contest winners.

I like Any Given Saturday's chances in the Derby but conformationally, there seems to be more strength in the topline/loin of other horses like Stormello and Nobiz Like Shobiz. Horses get a lot of their power from a good powerful loin connection and while it will not win a race, it will sometimes show me a nice-moving horse. And nice-moving horses do win some races- not all of them 8)

Of course, there are hundreds of factors that contribute to a Derby winner but a well-balanced horse who has some power in his engine is a big plus for me.
