a farriers impression of artificial surfaces

Postby louis finochio » Mon Sep 10, 2007 6:59 pm

I ask a farrier this morning his impression of the new artificial surfaces. He told me the horseshoes are lasting longer, but the tb feet still need trimming at their regular intervals.

Did he also mention that she's are lost and spred with irritating regularity? Clips are needed as the wax acts as lubrication for the nails... feet are on fore on the cushion, though not on Poly.... the gift goes on...

Do horses wear as many pads on the new surfaces?

Depends... I don't think they are a benefit on these surfaces, and add to the slippage... IMHO

tucumcari--advise your farrier to use bigger nails. they'll stay on. 4.5 australian will do the trick! 8)

What about the glue ons? I heard they are being used more frequently.

the glue shoes are used for tb with fragile hoofs, the cost to put on those shoes $250.00 for a set.

most farriers charge 125.00, some will give a discount under the table for 100.00 cash, as money talks.

No. As their feet are also growing at a strangely rapid rate. We get 3 weeks out of a shoeing before growth is too much. I have the best blacksmith on the grounds... the shoe problems on synthetics aren't any fault of his or his nail size.

Tuc...shoes don't need bigger clinches on the deeper artificial stuff? How do they stay on?

They stay on... clips were really useful on Poly... didn't have a huge problem on Cushion at Hollywood... Santa anita the shoes left on the track has thus far been minimal.
At De Mar, the shoes that were left on the track were significantly bent... suprised they didn't take half a foot with them... on Cushion, they are level.
Horses forge alot on synthetics, so it is little wonder that shoes will be and are lost
