Favorite Trick Stakes

Postby Bill from WA » Fri Oct 26, 2007 3:06 pm

Washington bred Margo's Gift won the $250,000 Favorite Trick Stakes at Monmouth today. The son of deceased stallion Polish Gift ran 6 furlongs in the slop in 1:10 flat, coming from off the pace with Ricky Frazier up. Margo's Gift is undefeated at sprint distances. Trained by Doris Harwood for Ken Alhadeff (grandson of Longacres racetrack founder Joe Gottstein). All of Margo's Gift's previous races were run at Emerald Downs. He paid $55 (I had a twenty on him). He was purchased by Alhadeff at a WTBA sale.

Hi Bill,
Congrats to you and Washington State :>) That brings to mind a breeder from Washington from way back, R.L. Edwards, do you remember him? Would you know if he or his family is still involved? TJ

Hi

Yes I remember R. L. Edwards. They had Flying E Ranch in Moses Lake. Among others he stood the Bold Ruler son, Balance of Power, and Star Ice by Arctic Prince at his farm. He is deceased, and I don't believe the family is involved in the industry now.

Polish Gift died earlier this year. The owners then bought his full brother Polish Miner to the same farm. Today's win is certainly a boon.

Margo's Gift's dam is also consigned to the WTBA Winter Sale.

Don't forget that this horse ran behind Smarty Deb in her last race beating the boys. Pretty good form.

Congrats on the win, Bill. Don't spend it all at once!

What a day for a lot of people. What a day for Washington and Washington Breds. Bill I appreciate all your support for Polish Gift and letting everyone know what his breeding was going to bring to Washington. Very modest crop this year in regards to the type of mares bred and look what was created. Larger second crop coming next year.

I am just so happy for Kenny Alhadeff, Doris Harwood, the family of the late Barbara Nelson and Ricky Frazier. This has to be one of the biggest races won by a 2 year old WA bred or a WA bred of any age don't you think? Where would you point him next? He is probably going to get some rest. How do you profile his potential to go longer distances or is he a Lost In The Fog type? That is a huge statement I know but I am so high on this gelding.

We have two very nice stallions in Polish Miner (Polish Gift's full and more accomplished on the race track brother) along with Trail City. I have a feeling that both of these guys will be leaders on the Washington Sire list for years to come. Polish Miner already has over $450,000 in progeny earnings this year for a 2nd crop sire.

It is going to be "Great In 08"

Hi Greg

I was very excited to see Margo's Gift win on Friday. I think he will be best suited as a sprinter/miler, maybe topping off at 9 furlongs. His conduit mare, Alanarka is classified as a "C" (middle distance). Best of luck with Polish Miner. Is he the "looker" that Polish Gift was? I haven't had time to run over and see him in person.
Just a note, Margo's Gift is hails from the same immediate family as multiple Graded Stakes winner, Witchful Thinking, both tracing tail female to Ask For The Moon.
