Horses that run on natural grass are making fewer average starts than they did 15 and 20 years ago.

The number of catastrophic breakdowns on grass has also increased in the last decade.

The track supers in california are being very prejudiced against the lonely grass horses IMO.

When will polytrack come out with POLYGRASS so I can sleep safe at night.

I recommend some good old-fashioned Tylenol PM to get you some sleep, but for god's sake, try some Ambien or Lunesta or a six-pack if that's what it takes; just leave the natural grass surface alone!

Here's an idea, lets just make ARTIFICIAL horses to run on ARTIFICIAL surfaces, dirt and grass (because that would be the safest thing to do). Here's another good idea, make a ARTIFICAL meal with lots of ARTIFICIAL flavors and truly enjoy those ARTIFICIAL tastes (because that is the safest way to avoid food poisoning). Then spend a nice quiet evening around a ARTIFICIAL fireplace with your ARTIFICIAL mate, followed by a night of ARTIFICIAL sex (because that is the safest kind of safe sex). From their you should be able to get a restful night of sleep.

Poytrack is much safer than natural dirt. I know it is. The salesman said so himself.

So PolyGrass is going to be much safer than natural grass as well. The state of California will pass a law requiring polygrass be required by every track.

Then we can all live happily ever after........

I think there is probably plenty of grass around all the CA tracks. Sounds like you've found it.

An artificial surface was used over 30 years ago at Calder and was made by 3M called "Tartan Track". Lasted 3-4 years and then they got rid of it as it created more problems then solved. Johnny Nerud trained for Tartan Farms which was owned by 3M executive back then.

The best tracks going today are GOOD dirt tracks such as Saratoga especially early in the meet when the track is deep and kind to the horses. They always like to speed the track up as the meet winds down but that is not a good practice. Many top trainers prefer training at the Saratoga training track whenever it's open due to its deep surface which is kind to their horses. Palm Meadows in Florida is another favorite of trainers for the same reasons. All tracks should be patterning their surfaces after Saratog'a training track as well as Palm Meadows. I've yet to be swayed by the artificial tracks though I have not disregarded them either.

My digiturf horse has never had a breakdown. Someone should ask them what kind of surface they use.
