Eight Belles tested negative for all banned substances including steroids and milkshakes. Perhaps PETA will now issue an apology and a retraction and return all monetary donations since the Derby.

The poster here who incorrectly accused Jones of using steroids and was sure that the tox screen would show Eight Belles was on steroids should apologize too.
The article is a bit misleading, stating she tested negative for all banned substances "including steroids". I don't think steroids are included in the list of banned substances (although she did test neative) because later in the artivcle, it also states Big Brown tested negative for all banned substances, but did not include the steroid highlight.

We will never know if the best horse won this years Kentucky Derby or if the horse with the best reaction to Winstrol won the race. I am sure the first three letters of WINstrol were not a random selection of letters. I am also sure that Equipoise was named for the owners who would rather not give their horse steroids ( it sounds like a vitamin with calcium to help a horse with its posture). Steroids have been legal for so long that we may be breeding generations of horses that have the greatest affinity to steroids and may not be the best natural racehorses.
If I could be anywhere at any time it would be Keeneland in the spring.

And you'd be wrong. Equipoise the horse who raced in the 30s was named after an actual dictionary word. Per my Random House dictionary, equipoise means "balanced, an equal distribution of weight." as a noun or as a verb "to equal or offset in weight". The horse had nothing to do with a steroid that hadn't even been invented much less marketed yet.

Thanks for the heads up Sysonby. I would have never guessed it was named after a horse. He was also a leading sire once. I was on a bit of a rant this morning but still believe its innocuous name is deceptive to less informed owners.

OT - Equipoise was by Pennant out of Swinging, so his name was a clever way to combine those two. It's a term for the lowest point of a swing cycle (think of a child's swing).

Well the article does say that she tested negative for steroids, and then later on the article says "In addition to the steroid tests. . ." Which seems to confirm that the gravaman of the article was that EB tested negative for steroids.
