Dutrow and Contessa must have "issues"

Postby jim10366 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 6:26 pm

the following is a quote from todays DRF from Dutrow's interview

"Dutrow said he would be in favor if veterinarians were barred from the grounds, and said he welcomed a national set of medication rules. In typical Dutrow fashion, though, he bashed many of New York's leading trainers over the years, basically accusing them of cheating.

"How does Oscar Barrera go from winning no races for 30 years and then he becomes the best trainer that's ever trained horses in two years, then they stop him and he goes 0 for 140?'' Dutrow said.

"The same thing with Gasper Moschera - where's he at? How did he get to be the man in New York by laying carpet, then they stop him and he gets out of the game. Peter Ferriola, Juan Serey.

You look at this jerk-off down there, [Gary] Contessa - how does he set records? How does he do it? C'mon, man, if everything is the same playing field, we're going to do as good if not better than anybody."

Contessa, who is the leading trainer in wins in New York, was dismissive of Dutrow's remarks.

"He's done more to hurt this business in the last three months than anybody has done,'' said Contessa, who is stabled five barns down from Dutrow at Aqueduct. "I'm still waiting for him to say something intelligent."

Cannabalism in Racing is Vicious

Postby horsenuts » Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:09 pm

And why no one rallies to anyone's side when they get caught with a 'bad test'. Everyone involved is pushing the envelope and if they find a good formula which can get by the test barn then they have a leg up on the competiton which in racing is often your neighbor. Racing brings out the worst in people as the jealousy and bitterness eats away at many of the players 24/7.

The Congressional hearings were very telling for anyone paying attention. HoF trainers and breeders had nothing good to say about their colleagues and one referred to racing as 'chemical warfare'. Only ones who think their isn't a good deal of rule bending going on is the current top players in the game. Of course they know better but are not about to rat themselves out so to speak.

Good for Contessa. Dutrow continues to make himself look like an ass

Dutrow certainly has been "A Tale of Two Cities". As big a buffoon as he's shown himself to be his candor about the type of drugs he uses is useful for the long term betterment of racing and will benefit racing in the long run. For far too long top trainers have been tight lipped about the use of varioius medications and treatments. Dutrow has been the 'sunshine' this dark subject has long needed and Dutrow may prove to be the 'disenfectant' racing needs to clean up its act and go forward.

In fairness Dutrow is an outstanding conditioner and it's not just because of drugs. Many, many trainers and wannabe trainers use steroids etc. with very litttle success.

I don't think Dutrow is a bad trainer. I am not even opposed to the responsible use of hormones and other medications. BUT he has to open his big mouth full of slanderous statements regarding other good trainers, throws stones from inside the glass house. He's not exactly the poster boy for horse racing. He makes alot of very bad decisions as far as his contact with the press. It's like alot of people who experience success they get an attitude of "it's my right to act this way, it's my right to win races, it's my right be a jerk." I live for the day that a soft spoken horseman hits the spotlight and stays there.
