How much to ship from NZ

Postby imnumberjuan » Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:52 pm

Now I understand my posckets aren't as deep as some - but looking at the form/earnings of the 4 in the 1st at Hollywood- why would you ship her around the world with earnings listed at $4 499 US?

She bled twice in New Zealand, which means a lifetime ban. Often when a horse bleeds twice (or even once, which is a 3-month ban) the "cure" is to send the horse to a (the?) country that allows the use of Lasix.

So, not much of a story there. Dolly Daggers does have a bit of a story to her though. In her two starts in December 2007 (before she bled in January '08 and was deregistered) she was victorious. Unfortunately the wins got taken off her because she apparently got into her trainer's garden and chomped on some poppies, which caused her to test positive for Morphine.

Poppies? Reminds me of a story - one of my friends ex-trainers wouldn't let you bet your horse in the barns for fear the cocaine residue found on money would lead to a bad test ( he seemed to have lots of reasons to why his horses failed tests  )

I still am having troubles understanding shipping her around the world

When you ship horses by air you are charged by the pallet which is an area that can hold three horses. Sometimes a buyer will throw on an otherwise moderate horse to make up a third horse and the only extras from then on would be the costs of quarantine and the paperwork. About 20 years ago I accompanied a stallion to Argentina and came back to the USA with three runners;as it turned out the extra horse included in the deal exceeded all expectations. As far as NZ horses are concerned I would like a barnful of them as they are tough, durable and honest. Through the years I have found that the hardy NZ mares have crossed very well with American Studs, Sir Tristram of course being the star.

It is the same rule over here, after one time of bleeding you are not allowed to race anymore nor to breed. So the horse is completely worthless in the TB scene and in fact to expensive even for meat

Thanks for the insight wilf. I guess I am glad she is getting a second shot at racing. I am curious to know what else came with her. As for throw in horses its funny how many have gone on to be stars (I know of one bought at auction for something like $1300 to fill a van - he went on to make $650 000 - a hundred times as a much as the balance of the van  ).
