Any Future for Race Tracks in Missouri? And if not...then what are the reasons for this when we have so many Casinos?
Thanks.

The real question is: Is there any future for racetracks anywhere? Relying on slot revenue hardly inspires confidence that there is a long term future for the industry.

Dave, and anyone else that feels like giving me their opinion on this. What is the current status on Racing period? We have only gotten into looking at this sport last month. So have no clue about it, heck we're struggling to learn the terminology as it is.
Is the only future for Breeding TB's in the Rings of Jumping events, etc?

I don't really know much about Missouri racing. But I do know that states where horse racing has lobbied and got casino gambling to supplement the sport got it tied to the racetracks alone. This is not to be confused with casino gambling owned by other interests. When the slots bill passed in Indiana, there was a brief moment the government planned casinos separate from Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs.. but the casino ended up at the track.

Several American Indian tribes own and operate casinos in many states. Those have nothing to do with horse racing. Ditto the casinos in established places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

It's rather like a chicken or egg problem. Where horse racing came first, and then got casinos, tied to horse racing, the casinos support the sport. Where casinos exist not tied to racing, I cannot fathom how they could be forced to put portions of their profits to fund purses for racetracks, hence I can't see how they would impact the future of horse racing.

Just my opinion.

As someone who has been involved (grudgingly) in the politics of horse racing vs casino gambling, here is my 2cents worth :

In a state like MO, which has current casino gambling, no horse racing, and a fairly strong religious lobby I would think a racetrack is as unlikely as a nullified national defecit. The reasons being the casinos will NOT want to share either revenue or client base and they have the $ to fight any such venture in the state legislature. The religious groups will also lobby against any expansion of gambling. The states where racetrack slots have been implemented are all states where racing was there first .Racing entities saw the "writing on the wall" and made a deal with the casinos to revenue-share or allow racinos.
