You know....this might be the only horse that NOBODY gave a shot. I love this.

Maybe I just like listening to the experts stutter.

Yay for Birdstone!

I gotta say; what a plain looking animal; cheap purchase price, moderate record, not much female family...but you can't give all the credit to Calvin...I saw that horse start his move way early. Really full of energy.
Where did this performance come from???

Let's review the facts:

1) a gelding sells for $9500 as a yearling.

2) this gelding goes on to win the Canadian Sovereign Award for 2yos.

3) he sells for $400,000 to owners who send him to Dick Mandella

4) Mandella can't get him to run, so they shuffle him off to NM.

5) The NM trainer has a record of one win in 32 starts. Gelding runs fourth in the sunland Park Derby

6) Someone gets the nutty idea to enter the Kentucky Derby, and everybody tells them they don't belong

7) Calvin Borel is free, so he takes the mount. The heavens open up and create an incredible inside bias for Bo-Rail.

8) Gelding wins the Derby, and trainer doesn't even crack a smile.

OMG! The New Mexico horse won it????

One word. Four letters. WOOT!

I was floored.

I was even more floored when I realized we know one of the owners, Dr. Blach of Buena Suerte Equine in Roswell, NM. Buena Suerte stands Bay Head King (who we've bred mares to) and So Long Birdie (Birdstone's half-brother). We just called to congratulate him, but got his voice mail. Probably because he was being interviewed on national TV at the time. LOL

Yes, Mine the Bird was totally overlooked, even by me. But even though he was racing here in the hinterlands, he was he 2YO Canadian Champion.

And I've been saying Birdstone was a far better horse than his race record indicated and that he's going to be a great sire. Maybe people won't laugh quite so loud at me now. They'll just chuckle quietly. :D

What a day.

Wow. Anyone have a link to video? I didn't see the overhead.

The superfecta paid over $200k, I think.

No the horse was born in Ky. Like all but one was. I think Advice was born in Fl.
Boy, i would have love to see something other than KY to win the Ky derby.

I know. It's a crime, isn't it? We didn't realize he was one of the owners until the post parade. Heck, I didn't even realize Mine The Bird was a NM horse until yesterday. (Shame on me again.) 8)

karen, yes, you're right. I didn't mean he's a New Mexico bred, but he was running here and his owners from Roswell and trainer's from Farmington, so we claim him. LOL

NBC was quoting the Super payoff as a $2 bet, TVG as a $1 bet, so both amounts are correct.
