my thoughts on the preakness

Postby bdw0617 » Sat May 16, 2009 4:33 pm

1. John V pulled a forty niner on rachael and it didn't work. Makes big drama look that much better. as well as rachael.

2. POTN is a turf horse. I've said it at elast 100 times. empire maker is a turf sire, I don't care if he won the belmont. his entire female family likes /loves turf and he sires turf horses.

3. Freisen Fire is just not good. Not to toot my own horn but I said his races in louisiana were a visual mirage, that he was actually slowing up but the horses behind him were just slower than he was.

4. Musket Man should go on every trifecta ticket you make for the rest of your life.

5. I have to give lukas some credit, flying private held his own. I'd give him a shot in the belmont.

6. Most importantly, all the naysayers.. this is why you run the race. for moments like this. without taking chances you don't get moments like this. and all game home fine, expect for a frew bruised egos.

Yes, please put POTN on the grass. He loves the fake stuff, which will likely translate to turf.
I really hope they don't run Rachel in the Belmont. MTB continues to amaze and go Musket Man, outrunning your sprinter pedigree.
I'm happy everyone finished safely. :D Good for racing to have a nice outcome with the Oaks/Derby exacta.

You are so right BDW, especially about Musket Man. I thought MTB ran a hell of a race and proved the KD was not fluke. Happy to see the filly win but what do you think about her running in the Belmont. I have mixed emotions about it.

no real feelings either way but I wouldn't be in a hurry to run her. at this point I'd be trying to get the HOY with her. I'd go haskell, Travers maybe, or maybe the 2nd leg of the triple tiara, JCGC, Classic or distaff.

I'm not crazy about running her 10 furlongs.

Strat, I would like to see her in the Belmont, but it is up to her to let her connections know if she's up to it. I got to thinking when Calvin said she was struggling with the surface, it might be a sign of some fatigue (that's just a hypothesis). Did this race take a little more than usual out of her tank because of the going? Calvin had to pop her a couple of times with the whip which she is not accustomed but she didn't get mad at him and swish her tail and stop. She is a strong filly, but if she shows any signs of being tired from her campaign, then her connections should think twice about the Belmont.

she really didn't look all that tired after the reace.. I mean she didn't look like dunkirk after the florida derby or anything. I really just don' tthink she cared for the track. very hard today.

I'm so glad it did not rain today, so now I don't have to hear it from Jon White and the POTN camp on excuses. you don't have a freaking dirt horse. get over it. no excuses. he just does not have the turn of foot necessary to be successful on dirt.

Good point that bears repeating. Sometimes you just have to dare.

Fabulous race today.

That's what I was thinking, not to say she's not up to the Belmont, but I keep thinking about Rags and wondering if it wouldn't be better for RA to skip the Belmont and get ready for Saratoga.

Awesome race! Congrats to the winner. I thought it was very formful: the best three horses ran 1-2-3, IMO. Glad Lukas earned some cash, too. I played Flying Private 4th in Supers in the Derby, but switched to Terrain for the Preakness: I played 13 / 3 / 2 / 6, in the triple and super. (Too bad I didn't swap Musket Man and Mine That Bird!) Oh well, it was a good day of racing I showed a profit on the other races, so I have no complaints. I hope they give her some time to rest, now.
(I need some down time, too ...)

Do we know who else is going for the Acorn? I wouldn't give up on that just yet. The problem with Mine That Bird is at a mile and a half he's gonna be even tougher. Like father like son. I agree with Calvin she sure looked like she wasn't tired but was struggling against something else. Maybe see how she likes Belmont but I'd be trying for the Haskell and/or Travers. Maybe Alabama/Travers.

What ifs....

Postby Joltman » Sat May 16, 2009 6:58 pm

What if -

1. MTB only had to run 1 1/8 in the Derby and had a tad more left in the tank.

2. This race went 1/16 longer and RA saw MTB coming.

3. RA skips the Belmont - does Calvin have a mount?

IMO RA ran an incredible race. Its very difficult for a horse to hook up with a front runner, put that one away and have anything left in the stretch, especially if she was not handling the footing well. BTW, when was 'handling the footing' anything other than an excuse for losing - yet this was a winning effort?

MTB was awesome. If he finds a crack between horses earlier somewhere and doesnt go so wide, he wins.

Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

Good points, because I spent more time trying to see the gallop out after the wire, to see if MTB passed her than I should have. Wanted to just enjoy her win, but was just so intrigued with MTB's run.
