Drilling for Oil stolen, slaughtered

Postby Heidilady » Fri Aug 07, 2009 3:12 pm

Drilling for Oil was stolen out of his pasture and killed for meat in Peru. Poor horse.

Here's the TB Times article on his retirement in May. He was in Peru for the Southern Hemisphere season with Northern Hemisphere rights being kept so I assume he might've come back here in the future.

Here's the article talking about his theft, killing, and well I won't go into the ultimate fate out of respect for the faint of heart but they talk about it. Truly tragic and what a nice horse. He was by Giant's Causeway out of a half-sister to Affirmed who also produced Dr. Caton and the dam of French Oaks winner Confidential Lady. He sure looked nice on the turf with that classic Affirmed chestnut coat. I'm not clear if he was able to cover mares or not. I assume after June 1st you're approaching the breeding season so maybe a month they might've managed something? I was upset just because of what happened to him, but it would be some small measure of comfort that he had passed on some of himself to a few foals.

I'm sorry for your loss. :( I'm sure you got attached. He looked so beautiful and to know he was a sweetheart to boot, it's so tragic. If he had a kind temperament, I wonder if that made it easier to catch him. I hear about how thieves here do it in terms of wooing the animals. Sadly, it's almost going to save their lives to be easily spooked or a crafty escapee in the pasture in this situation.

That other situation with the 2 stallions is just sickening. I guess if they're willing to violate human rights laws, the lives of horses are nothing to them. If anybody has a horse, now's the time to go out and give them a great big hug. What other stallions are down there in Peru right now that we might know? Not that only those are important, I just know that I'm sure I've heard some fan favorites at least standing the Southern Hemisphere season there before.

ETA: Just answered my own question. Holy crap, Mongoose is down there. Here's the list I got off of Bloodhorse's Stallion Register and the farm.

Candamo (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)
Chepeconde (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)
Flanders Fields (at Haras San Pablo S.A.)
Kamel (PER) (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)
Mongoose (at Rancho Sur Farm)
Palermo (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)
Six Bits (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)
Sky Marshal (at Haras Piromix-Arequipa)

A lot of insured horses are mistaken for deer during hunting season, especially if they have fell from favor.

Sickening. Guess horsemeat is now the hot commodity on the black market. Good grief, stealing a horse out of his pasture to butcher him. Decapitating two horses that might be a political "statement." Yep, if they can do this to animals, it is no stretch of the imagination what they do to people.

There's been a string of similar incidents this year in Florida. It's bad enough this sort of thing happens in Peru, but here?
