Any interesting maiden winners?

Postby JYS » Sat Nov 21, 2009 2:12 pm

This is the time of the year where I really start looking at some late developing two year olds. It might be fun to keep a list going of any that have impressed you.

It's always fun to throw a few dollars on futures.

For what it's worth though, synthetics have turned me off when it comes to the Derby Trail, so I personally don't even look at the Cali tracks and Keeneland.

There was a Yes It's True colt that won at Calder on the turf a few days ago. His name is Nordic Truce. There's a ton of stamina in the female family and if he can transfer any talent to the dirt, he might be one to watch, at least in the preps.

I like Buddy's Saint (St. Liam) who technically broke his maiden in the Nashua Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct, as he was disqualified from first in his debut outing.

I watched his race and he opened up the bulk of his large winning margin down the final stretch, and obtained a pretty heady Beyer figure in doing so.

So in his second start he has probably accumulated enough graded earnings to get into the Derby, has already got a three figure Beyer around two turns in conventional dirt, and has the pedigree to get the Classic distance. Definitely one to watch.

American Lion
dryfly
drusselmeyer
nordic truce (best 2YO i've seen so far, but a turfer.. this is a star in the making IMHO)
Winslow Homer

I'm going to go on record and say that nordict truce is the most athletic horse I've seen since afleet alex. he won by about 5 and did so in like 4 jumps, but it wasn't how much he won by but he he moves. looks like a real athlete.

american lion races in the hollywood prevue in about 1 hour at hollywood park. he looks the part and is very athletic and big.

A filly that won last weekend at Churchill, Queen of the Creek will be heard from down the road. She's extremely talented.

filly wise, teeming's first filly is going to be in the kentucky oaks. Carassing, I think that's how you spell it. she's very very good. won the grade 3 in woodbine in a armchair ride.

the best maiden i have seen recently is not a 2YO but a 3YO. heavinly prizes daughter, distinctivly, looks looks like a really classy filly that will rrelish going as far as you can write a race.

The filly's correct name is Cascading. (A P Indy - Teeming by Storm Cat)

I agree, Bdw on Nordic Truce. I loved everything about his race. It's why he's the only horse I mentioned in the original post. He's literally the only one who I thought "damn, that horse has a ton of potential".

I'll hold judgement on whether he's only a turfer. I'm sure he'll get a shot on the main track, ala Big Brown.

Speaking of Big Brown, Chicago78's contribution Queen of the Creek is from his immediate family. She's a half-sister to Big Brown's dam. What a gorgeous pedigree.

Here's the replay to Nordic Truce's race.

He's second to last throughout the first half of the race and then starts weaving his way through horses as if he is a seasoned pro. Amazing effort. I will be very disappointed if he doesn't do some big things in his career.

Yes. They're just as effective on the dirt. In fact, Yes It's True is considered a dirt sire. But this colt's female family is all turf and stamina. So here's hoping he gets versatility from all aspects of his pedigree.

really impressive the way he moved up the backstretch. Clemente is on a role.

clemente starts everything on the turf so the start on the turf really doesn't conern me as much on second thought.

he'd start an AP indy out of an unbriedled on the turf

I thought the same thing, which is why I mentioned I'm sure he'll get his chance on the dirt if he keeps winning. Here's hoping.

damnit he has another one, the filly strike it rich just looked very nice. not nordic truce nice but very nice nevertheless

He's starting to get alot more high priced horse flesh. I think this is the start of the migration from the large scale operation to more of the smaller operations. strike it rich is a 350k by unbridled song out of a grade 2 winner (the most dirt pedigree i have ever seen and won goign away on grass).

Unbridled's Song gets his fair share on the turf. Probably the Caro coming through.

Strike It Rich's dam was a very good race mare in her day. I remember her quite well.
