Gotta wonder why some trainer didn't go to Edgar Prado for his/her Derby mount? He certainly ranks in the top 20 riders around, HOF, and prior Derby winner, I gotta believe you would have upgraded a bit from a couple in the field. I'm all for loyalty, but in the big race you take your best shot.

Hi Jolt,
He recently parted ways with his long time agent (Bob Frieze) who kept him in the higher echelon....possibly the reason for his lack of rides in the classic and his slow Gulfstream meet. He's won well over 6,000 (accomplishing that mark in 2008) races in his career, is a hall of fame jockey, rides for Ricky Dutrow pretty much 1st call and recently (April 23 won 5 races on that card at Aqueduct following his return from GP). I don't think he'll be packin his tack up for a while yet. He's 43 years old and once the politics of switching agents runs it's course he will be back on top....he is well liked, respected and one of the most honest, caring jockeys riding today. TJ
Thx Tj - that makes sense. Changing agents will mess things up for a while. He is a class guy and will give his mounts every opportunity.
All jocks go through ups and downs. It wasn't that long ago that Desormeaux hit a bad skid. Mike Smith has been given up as a lost cause many times. Those with the skills and work ethic will come back.
The five win day might be a sign that he is heading back up to the top. Given his experience at Pim if someone doesn't offer him a mount at the Preakness they're missing out.

If you need a sign of Prado's issues right now, check out the 7th race at Belmont from this past Friday. We ran our horse Zifzaf against Academy Run who was the big favorite. The horse got loose on the lead and Prado couldn't hold him. By the time the horses were getting near the wire, Academy Run had absolutely nothing left, and was blown by. The horse was clearly, on paper, the strongest in the race, and in fact was the best bet of the day for Litfin in the Form. I think Prado's inability to hold him was the primary reason the horse didn't win.
Don't get me wrong, I've always liked Prado and I really hope he regains his form...this just struck me as an example of what's been wrong lately.

thanks for the Belmont race link
It looked like the horse was hell bent in running off like that. Prado may have had some injuries that compromised his ability to wrestle him in. Or he may have thought him so much better that he could get away with it. Wrangling one who wants to run off seems to burn more energy than it saves some times.
An upset win in the Preakness might send his stock up again.

He certainly looked better yesterday, yeah. I actually thought he gave Yawanna Twist the best chance he had to win as well, not sending him on a kamikaze run to the lead (though it seemed like he was warming up for that, galloping strongly to the gate). Maybe the light bulb is about to come back on. Hope so cause he's such a nice guy and hard not to root for.
