starting young horses

Postby roxie901 » Tue Feb 22, 2005 9:37 am

does anyone have suggestions of trainers in Virginia who have a good reputation for starting young horses to race? The horses have a good ground handling foundation with one of them already broke. I am looking for someone to bring them along to the track now....
thanks-

There's a training center in Middleburg that friends of mine have used and been pleased with. I'm sorry I don't have any more details but it probably shouldn't be too hard to find.

I am in Central VA so anywhere in VA would be accessible. Even just over the border in WV or MD would be okay.

We have some friends who race at CT and my aunt lives in White Post, Va, (she's an endurance type, but has a lot of horse contacts) so I will check with them and see if they have any suggestions.

roxie901: I've not forgotten about you. I'm looking for that trainer's name and # in Warrenton. She works specifically with racehorses and that's what you want. Best wishes - Shammy

roxie901: You have a PM with the right lead for your starters. I hope this helps. I'm very confident about this particular trainer because of the many nice comments I've heard about her dedication and honesty. Keep me informed about MONTY. I'll drive another 3 hours to see him run. I think your new trainer has done a superb job. Will keep the light on for you if you want to visit Sassy and as I told you the book is open if you liked to take a chance on either Chuck or RB. Best wishes. Sincerely, Shammy

Randy Miles in Montpelier is a very good horseman - does very well at the Timonium Two Year Old sale and has quite a few repeat customers among East coast trainers because he does not push his horses. Often his two year olds will only be making their 2nd or 3rd breeze at that sale (which is in May). He has a very good surface and lets the horse tell himm when it is ready for any speed work.

Also Noel Twyman at the same location - a serious foxhunter that is an excellent horseman.

I have been pleased with the services of Donna Dennehy at Eagle Point Farm in Ashland, Va. She is an honest person and keeps you informed. I know of other owners that use her on a regular basis to get their horses ready for the track. And some of the horses have done well at the track.

Current rate $29/day

Good luck!
