Hey Joe - Haskins says in BH that
ROCKPORT HARBOR needed a tough prep to make him a real Derby contender. Was the Rebel Stakes it? Maybe we're discarding him too early. His speed to stamina numbers are middle of the road but he looks like a colt w/a whole lotta "bottom." Besides old man "Holthus" doesn't manage a shabby stable. His jockey is sure moving up in the ranks in NY. Best regards - Shammy
Holthus is a good trainer, although not one of your "big" names. By playing the races I'vee seen him for years and he usually does a good job. A bunch of us cashed on Greater Good in that race because we thought he was a good horse and nice and fit. We all thought he would pass Afleet Alex, but he passed Rocky.
Rocky is an exceptional horse. He didn't switch leads until the 1/16th pole and seems to be a bit immature, but he did run well. I think there is a lot more horse there. This would be very bizarre if 2 Philly Park horses won the Derby 2 years in a row. The oddest thing would be is they are about as different as different can be.
We'll see, he's a good horse if he stays fit.
