Azeri in the BC Classic

Postby Kari » Thu Sep 16, 2004 8:42 pm

I just saw this article on the Bloodhorse website. Apparently Paulson and Lucas are considering sending her out against the "big boys". Have they lost their minds? Does she really have a chance against Birdstone? After losing to Storm Flag Flying, I don't see how it's possible, but maybe I'm missing something.

No chance, but then I'm not that surprised to hear they are considering it. You'd have thought the two clunkers she'd already thrown against the boys would be enough to clue them both in.

One of the local casinos has had her listed at 100-1 since about July.

I don't think she has a chance either. But this sport is about dreams and just because your rich and successful doesn't mean your judgement won't be clouded by your dreams.

AZERI is sitting on a BREAKDOWN, not unlike GO FOR WAND.

This will be really positive (?) for racing, to see yet another star die on national television in front of millions.

Laura D. told them to retire her; the kid wanted more, more, money out of her.

This story can not have a happy ending.

RETIRE AZERI................................NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gimme a break, if the horse breaks down it won't be because of what Laura was talking about. That was a long time ago and in the interim the horse has run some very good times.

I think its hard for folks to remember that ownership has its priveledges. Owning a racehorse means you dictate whether the horse retires or races, hopefully in good communication with the horses trainer. We can all sit and Monday morning quarterback but reality is that no one can tell him what to do with his horse. This is not a personality contest. He is in this business to make money (and hopefully gains enjoyment from the horses as well) not to make friends and please the public. While this is not easy for many to swallow, its reality.

I would imagine this will be her last race and the boys class is a little weaker with Smarty, Congaree, Lion Heart, Candy Ride et al gone. They are probably thinking give her one last chance against the boys.

Weaker? Not likely. She's a good mare, but I don't think she's of the calibur necessary to beat Possibly Perfect, Roses In May and Ghostzapper. She's already shown she has no desire to run with the males.

I disagree Jessi P:

Ownership does has it priveledges but dictating where your horse runs and when is not one of them. That is the TRAINERS job to pick out races and communicate with the owner what the plans are. When owners start picking races for there horses it creates problems. if paulson wants to pick the races for Azeri tell him to get his trainers license. Remember Lukas has the trainers license but hes too dumb and has a bigger ego than Paulson to steer him to the right race.

Azeri will strain her azz off in the Classic against Ghostzapper and Pleasantly whatever his name is. She hasnt done well against the boys already. What happens if she strains so hard she snaps her leg down the stretch. Then what... Put the horse where she belongs and get the earnings recored and then retire or whatever he wants to do.

We will have to agree to disagree, ageecee! Now say that 10 times, fast~ lol.

Owners and trainers dont all have the same relationships. Some owners leave it to the trainers to run the show and dictate where the horses will race, including picking specific races. Some owners want to discuss and plan (in a more general sense) with their trainers but leave the specifics to the trainer. Some owners want the trainer to train the horse but the owner makes the decisions on where and when the horse will race. This is part of the selection process in picking a trainer to train your horses, as an owner. Not all trainers will take a horse if the owner wants to dictate when and where the horse is to be entered, so those trainers have the right to refuse training horses for an owner who wants to operate that way if they dont feel comfortable with that type relationship.

And this is not unique to the horseracing world - when I moved to Warren Ohio and got a new small animal vet about 8 years ago I was asked to fill out a questionaire. One of the things that vet wanted to know was which did I prefer:

a) the vet make all decisions and do whatever testing needed to be done w/o consultation
b) the vet discussed "probables" with me, informed me of what tests could be done to determine or rule out possibilities and together we formed a plan of attack
c) the vet informed me of my options but did not take initiative on his own without my approval, left the decisions to me.

Of course I chose option B, as I feel I am somewhat literate and able to help participate in health care choices for my dog and cat. But at the same time I recognize that the vet has far more knowledge and practical experience than I do and is of course able to offer a sound valid opinion. And this is the relationship I try to have with owners... who are usually folks with knowledge and experience in this business and we work together to formulate a plan/strategy for the horses including generally but not specifically a type of race and a time period. "Ok, the horse is about ready to run within the next 2-3 weeks..., still training well, still anticipating racing at X level." Just an example of course LOL.

Jessi i know how it works trust me. When an owner starts picking out the races for his horse i tell him/her to come pick up his horse ASAP. Im the the trainer and i pick the races.

I look at it this way and dont take this as being arrogant. The owners need me i dont need them. I got the trainers license they need me.

with all due respect, they got the horses...you got no barn without the owners

they also pay the bills and if they wanna take a shot at a bigger purse or a bigger prize for their future stallion/broodmare, well that's their right...it can directly impact them financially on a much higher level

This debate is not unlike the one in 1986, when Lukas' LADY'S SECRET was on her way to a championship season against her own sex. Lukas and owner Eugene Klein publically floated the notion of running her against the boys in the Classic, but in the end decided against it. She still received Horse of the Year honors because longshot SKYWALKER won the Classic, defeating her main competition, TURKOMAN and PRECISIONIST.

Lukas and Paulson both like center stage and, unless they kill each other first, will probably keep Azeri's hat in the Classic ring until the last moment.

There are plenty of owners in this business who dont mettle in what the trainer is trying to do. So that being said i will have horses in my barn.
