Marathon race at Mountaineer

Postby Georgerz » Wed Sep 03, 2014 11:23 am

There was an 18 furlong race at Mountaineer Park, I enjoyed seen the replay. It would be nice if more tracks carded races this long, or at least 1 1/2 miles and over.

Georgerz, several tracks run marathon series in that part of the world. Presque Isle has a lucrative series on their Tapeta surface culminating in a finale of at least 2 miles on closing day. Mountaineer run a turf distance series ,weather permitting ending around Labour Day and then do another series on the dirt ending around Christmas going about 2 and a quarter miles. Thistledown try to run distance races ending in a 2 miler on closing day but have difficulty filling them. Fort Erie do run a few distance races and always run the "Tour de Fort" going 2 miles and 70 yards on closing day. The now defunct Beulah Park ran a marathon series in spring and fall, so really there are opportunities for horsemen if they give there horses a chance to show what they can do.

Would really like to see more of those
"marathon" kind of races but with an
incentive for entire horses who
win the race. That is the kind of incentive
that may help boost future distance
horses and stamina broodmare sires.
