2014 Melbourne Cup
Well what a day it was down under for "the race that stops a nation". The winner was the strongly fancied Protectionist, a German trained son of the mighty sire Monsun who had his second cup winner in a row . However the race was quickly consumed by the news that the Japanese favourite Admire Rakti who tired badly to be eased up at the finish had died of apparent heart failure about 15 minutes after the race. Not only that but a very nice horse Araldo an import who had been in Oz for a year or two and finished a creditable 7th of 22 sustained a shattered hind pastern after kicking out at a flag after the race and was euthanised. Never a dull moment at the Cup but what a tragedy for those connections.
