Makes sense to me.
"A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher...You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse." C. S. Lewis

You know I was just checking out something a friend told me - back in 2011 her first win was at Turfway MSW and the check was NSF - but the purse was $22,000!!! Miss Pinkerton won that 2/14 this year, EIGHT YEARS later (and the check was also NSF) and the purse was $18,500. That's almost 20% less and believe me the costs of racehorse training have not gone down 20%. Turfway either needs to step it up or step the heck out of the way.

Another pretty awesome week for Team Royal huh? I'm guessing you were prowling the grounds at Keeneland this week...

Heck no I was at Belterra closing out the meet with a BIG BANG!!! Another Friday-Saturday back to back 2 wins there for us! (We did that back in June with Belgian Candy and Miss Pinkerton) Stormy Memo nailed her field in the 8th on Friday and then my incredible Queen Maxine blew away the 2nd on Saturday! I call her Max to the Max because she gives it everything every time. She's been back in training since May 8th and has racked up about $20K! They are all coming home end of October shoes off and a couple of months of play time (there will be nowhere around here to run until Churchill January). So Far 9 wins this year for Team Royal from just four fillies.

Nothing at KEESEP for me this year I'm waiting for the winter sales.

If it were me the $$$ would be spent already ... But the time off - while there's still some grass to chew on, will be good. Only concern I would have is that their metabolisms might want to slow down with winter coming and winter coats and all.

And a vacation for their trainer maybe?

Well the $$$ is kind of spent we caught up a lot of old stuff and there is still more to go.. got some breathing room is all.

Turfway has been making noise now about wanting their winter meet back - they have decided to run their 12 days in December after all. The decision of Turfway vs Churchill will be made Oct 29th at the racing commission meeting. I'm voting for Churchill.

I used to admire the fact that Churchill pulled a rabbit out of the hat (Meeker) to save the track and Ky racing back in the 80s and really pumped money into facilities. But the Arlington ballyhoo is just a long line of unfriendly decisions where they're following the money, and having a competitor, even a weak one like Turfway, is a bit of a safety balance. Who's to say they won't build something then shut it down and keep the casino and dump the funds into the spring meet - and the horsemen lose a whole lotta dates.

I don't know the inside information on the Illinois mess - but it would appear that the Illinois Racing Commission Let It Happen - I think also the experiences in West Virginia and other states where they "got" gambling to help racing but had no teeth in the law so that later the state who gaveth could taketh away should help shape how lawmakers tie the slots into racing. I do see that the word "avarice" applies particularly strongly to churchill downs but rather like recent US presidential elections this one might come down to the lesser of evils. We'll have to wait until Oct 29th to see what happens.

Thanks - we'll see if we go. They've been posting "off the turf" at 7am which is great we can decide. Since I took them all home I don't have to leave with the horse until about 10:30 - my owner says we are 12-1. She's loaded for bear though.

Since Churchill changed the purse structure they pay $1455 to last on this one. Not that we expect to be last but anything can happen in a horse race. :)
