Bellamy Road

Postby Mahubah » Sat Apr 09, 2005 3:11 pm

A most impressive performance for Bellamy Road in the Wood today -- granted, the track was playing quite fast, but he simply coasted home and equaled the track record doing it, and just kept on galloping happily until the brakes were finally applied. Concerto stood for $3500 the year BR was conceived, is now up to $5000, and I'll bet the phones are ringing off the hook at Ocala Stud right now even though we're midway through the breeding season.

Mahubah - you absolutely captured how he won that race - so relaxed and yet powerful and dominant beyound belief. Made the time seem unreal because the outcome was never in doubt from the top of the turn into the home stretch.

The most impressive performance by a 3yo so far. His Index is in the realm of getting the Derby distance, a liitle like War Emblem's (1.18).

7-5-4-6-4 (12/10) (1.28) (16-15-14) (11.04)

The Derby's pace scenerio will be key. I don't think Bellamy Road can get away alone on the lead in the Derby, nonetheless, he has to be considered a live contender.
I thought Wilko's (4-5-5-7-4) (9/11) (0.90) (14-17-16) (12.40) effort was encouraging in the SA Derby. Should serve as a tightener. Good efforts by Buzzard's Bay (3-5-6-6-4) (8/10) (0.85) (16-17-16) (12.63) and the Sweetsouthernsaint son, General John B (3-6-7-6-4) (9/10) (0.90) (16-19-17) (12.38).

These derby preps never cease to amaze me. There are always clunkers, and always new kids coming out of the woodwork. Bellamy Road was hidden from my world before this race, but NOT NOW!!

Interesting that two of todays winners mentioned are Florida-breds: Bellamy Road and Buzzards Bay, both by modest sires out of apparently pedestrian mares (correct me if I am wrong here - just going by what's in the data base). Maybe its the old Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector nick. Or Bellamy Road's In Reality & Cozzene; Buzzards Bay's Ribot and Damascus. Or just random genetic combustion.

Santa Anita looked like a tougher field and a more dramatic finish, including Wilko with his absolute determination to make his neck a few feet longer - but boy, seeing Bellamy Road just power away from the rest was really fun! I think I have to root for him after seeing his sheer joy in running.

Monicabee, I love your newly-coined phrase  . I hope it catches on in the genetics world. RANDOM GENETIC COMBUSTION. :P

That was one heck of a performance! Wilko's still my Derby pick, but BR ought to make things exciting. :D

I took a look at Concerto for Owner-Breeder International last year, and I think he definitely throws to returns of the 21-a family to which his broodmare sire In Reality belongs, including working well with inbreeding to In Reality.

Bellamy Road's dam hails from one of the best female families in the studbook, that of Exclusive, Bellamy Road's 7th dam. His 5th dam, Ten Cents a Dance produced Alabama winner Verailles Treaty, who in turned produced Saarland. His fourth dam produced good Grade 1 Claiborne sire Out of Place and many a talented race mare. And then his next two dams produced high quality allowance and stakes horses. This female line is one of the best and also one of the safer "bets" in producing stallions-- Out Of Place, Exclusive Native, General Assembly, American Chance, Saarland, Jackpot so on and so forth.

Coquinerie, have you been in cahoots with Pete Siegel? Pete suggested my mare Shake On It (third dam Exclusive through Exclusive Native) be bred to Saarland (4th dam Exclusive through Exclusive Dancer) based on the strength of that family and a FEELING that the progeny might be special. I hope you both are right.

(By the way, I'm still waiting on Shake's baby's pictures.)

Hi Henthorn,

He suggested Saarland after I gave him the idea!

I was at Aqueduct today and it was a very strange track. anything ahead at the top of the stretch had a huge advantage. In the Carter they ran a 1:07 2/5 split.

Wilko ran a beautiful race, however he is small and seemed to be all out to try and catch a longer striding horse. Very gallant performance. He showed me a lot of determination and guts today, in order to bring home the roses he's going to need some luck to go with it.

lol Have no idea who Pete Siegel is but I do love the cross. There's a few female families that in my opinion you cannot get enough lines and inbreeding to, and that's one of them.

I also must say I love that Bellamy Road's sire is Concerto, a son of Chief's Crown. My filly Coquinerie is tail-female to Miss Carmie and its good to see more of that family being represented. Anything to help the family out! Here's hoping Coquinerie's 340k Elusive Quality 3/4 brother, Tradition, add's to the "tradition" of this family. Jay Em Ess Stable bought him. I also own breeding rights to the Arch filly Chitchat Chitchat who is also tail-female to Miss Carmie through a different daughter. And I may be about to buy into a Coronado's Quest filly out of the Miss Carmie line as well. I go to check her out next week. I had no intentions of focusing on this family, but it just sort of all fell onto my lap and I guess what i'm saying is, when working with such classy female lines, enjoy and concentrate on it.

You hear that, Pete? You've been away from the forum too long, and people are here who don't know who you are. Actually, Pete and his family are supposed to be on an Italian vacation, but somebody named John Paul died over there and put a monkey wrench in their travel plans. I'm sure they'll forgive him.

Pete is a valued member of the forum who has a lot of insight into various aspects of racing and breeding and sales. He has been busy lately.
