Derby trivia

Postby monicabee » Mon May 02, 2005 4:59 am

There are 4 horses in the Derby Field whose tail female line has been in the US since before the American Revolution (with two having been exported for a generation, but returning).

Finding them won't necessarily help your handicapping, but it does illustrate the depth of the taproots of racing in American history.

Buzzard's Bay, Spanish Chestnut, Coin Silver, and Closing Argument, with the last two tracing to Maria Slamerkin (USA) (1769), but through different Conduit mares. Coin Silver through Madcap (B/C), and Closing Argument through Artless (C) (same as Monarchos).

Bill, I gather from the posts on Coin Silver you think he can be a contender at the distance. I haven't seen his races, unfortunately. I wish he wasn't so overloaded with Raise a Native sire lines, but hey, I only see Turn-to once!

Until Monarchos, there hadn't been a 4-r winner in a while... since 1924 ( looked this up on tbheritage), though there were 4 before him. Family number 4 in all its branches has made a very strong showing, but it is also one of the strongest in number as well.

Family A24 has had one winner in 1888, MacBeth II.
Buzzards Bay just didn't seem to be a wow horse like Bellamy Road, but he did show some fight. It will be good for his sire, now in PA, if he shows well in the race.

The other two I simply don't know much about.

6-a, Spanish Chestnut's faimly, is nothing to sneeze at though, with 3 Derby winners Count Fleet, 1943; Bold Venture, 1936; Worth, 1912.

You posted elsewhere your stats for Coin Silver:

Profile: 8-4-3-5-7 (12/12) (1.05) (11.81)
Madcap: None

Definitely has the profile to get 10 furlongs.

Any of the other three look promising via your conduit mare system?

Hi

Buzzard's Bay: 3-5-6-6-4 (8/10) (0.85) (12.63) Has 10 furlongs well within his capabilities.

Spanish Chestnut: 6-6-6-7-3 (12/10) (1.26) (11.11) If he gets loose alone on the lead he could get the distance.

Closing Argument: 11-2-8-0-6 (13/6) (1.60) (9.78) Profile indicates sprinter/miler type, but the 6 professional points offer some hope of getting more. Not likely though.
