just one little note... Probably all of you have read who is Giacomo named after and why... dam's name is by Sting's song, and Giacomo is named by his son. Wel... just look at his sire line, horse born 1921. Very nice, don't you think? :D

After observing Giacomo coming back to the winners circle, I noticed he wouldnt have blown out a match, as he was in super, super form.

Let the connections speak to the above comment:

We never had him ready like we did today," winning rider Mike Smith said. Indeed, Giacomo had run in very good company but always come up just a bit short. But the big stretch at Churchill Downs proved to his liking, the son of Holy Bull out of the Stop the Music mare Set Them Free rolling past Closing Argument once he got clear sailing to win by a half-length.

There are always so many variables, and a really good horse is exactly the one which can cope well with most of them as in track conditions, distances, tight company, etc. etc. I'm not convinced that pedigree is all that significant, but that training, conditioning, and the skill of the jockey [stragtgy] carries enormous weight all things being more or less equal.
Horses are not machines; they have on and off days, and they respond in different way to vairous situations.
What was so curious about this derby is that almost none of the favorites were in contention with the exception of Afleet Alex who must be considered the best 3-year old at this time, inspite the fact that he didn't win the Derby. To that extent, the Derby is just another race. LOL, the horse surely doesn't know the difference, but 'may' in the 1.5 mile Belmont. Comsoder also that AFleet Alex raced 10 races already:

10 Starts, 6 Wins, 2 Places, 1 Shows Career Earnings: $1,515,800 as of 5/7/05
On the board 9 times out of the 10 starts

Closing Argument: 8 Starts, 3 Wins, 3 Places, 2 Shows Career Earnings: $946,984 as of 5/7/05
8 for 8 on the board

Giacomo: 8 Starts, 2 Wins, 2 Places, 2 Shows Career Earnings: $1,866,316 as of 5/7/05

6 out of 8 on the board

If they had done that, then Afleet Alex would not be Afleet Alex. He would be a different horse. Jeremy said he had to use him a couple times to gain postition and when AA made those short little bursts of speed, he had to use himself. That is why alex did not win the derby, not because his lack of it stamina, he has plenty of it.
And BEGONE is GONE!
