STAR OVER THE BAY PUT DOWN

Postby louis finochio » Sun May 15, 2005 3:18 pm

Star Over the Bay trained by Mike Mitchell snapped of his sesamoid and was put to sleep while running in a turf race in the far east.

Star Over the Bay was claimed by Mike Mitchell and proved an excellent claim for Mike.

Rest in Peace Star Over the Bay as you always tried hard.

That's one of the barns I say a prayer for the horse when it ends up there!

Might I ask how one "snaps off a seasamoid?"
Do you know what that is? or where?
He broke it, shattered it... not snapped off. Try to get it right

Tuc...

Try to have a little tolerance for those of us who may not speak as well as you might prefer. When any bone in a horse breaks while racing, it often sounds like it is "SNAPPING" like a twig or piece of wood. It's an expression.

I was saddened by the news of Star Over The Bay's fatal injury. He was such a pleasure to watch, not just because he was such a stunning horse (glowing white). When he got on the front he just didn't want anybody to pass him, such a competitor. I have a great picture of him posing like a statue before his awesome win in this year's Sunshine Millions. What a character. May he RIP.

Dumb question coming... prepare yourself...

 Please explain what a sesamoid is.  Is the sesamoid what might be the ankle of a human being? Is it the angled part just above his hoof??

Sooo sorry for this promising beautiful horse.

FV...here is a great link to an illustration of a horse's legs
http://www.wiwfarm.com/forelegs.htm

It shows the sesamoid bones along with the sesamoid ligaments.

Thank you for posting the link. I try to learn new things every day, and i've heard of this injury before. Most often connection with the horse being subsequently euthanized.

Anatomy was never my strongpoint, though i dd at one time aspire to going to Curtis Veterinary College. I've owned horses for many years, but never learned all this. :)

There's a good article about him on BloodHorse right now:

Trainer Mitchell Can't Forget Star Over the Bay

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Trainer Mike Mitchell tried to concentrate on work in his Hollywood Park stable office Wednesday but found it impossible to forget about grade I winner Star Over the Bay, whose winner's circle pictures hung on the wall.
Star Over the Bay, a 7-year-old gelding, was euthanized on the track after breaking down with a ruptured sesamoid in his right foreleg midway through the Singapore International Airlines Cup (Sng-I) at Kranji Racecourse on Sunday.
Star Over the Bay was near the front at the half-mile pole when he was injured.
"I just marked him off the charts this morning and I have pictures of him all over the house," said Mitchell. "I don't want to forget this horse, but the memories are real tough."
Star Over the Bay won 10 of 43 starts and earned $917,353. Claimed for $80,000 last year for G Racing, Carl Van Burger and Landon Vaughn, Star Over the Bay went on to win three graded turf stakes in 2004 – the Clement L. Hirsch Championship (gr. IT) at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park's Sunset Handicap (gr. IIT) and the Del Mar Handicap (gr. IIT). He added the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Turf in January.
"I saw Tyler (Baze) pulling him up and didn't realize how bad it was until he came back crying," said Mitchell. "If I could have just brought him back and retired him, I would feel so much better."
Mitchell had nothing but compliments about his treatment on his first visit to the Southeast Asian nation. "I couldn't have been treated any better," said Mitchell. "It was a beautiful city and a beautiful hotel, and everybody was great.
"But I would be surprised if an American horse ever wins a race like this," continued Mitchell. "It's a tough race to win. The horses are good, and the humidity is tough."

He was a good horse.
