Check out Jorge Ricardo

Postby Swaps1955 » Mon Jun 06, 2005 6:01 pm

We Northern Hemisphere folks have been justifiably lauding Russell Baze's 9,000 wins as the 2nd leading rider in the world, but mostly ignorant of a Southern Hemisphere Brazilian rider named Jorge Ricardo who amassed 9,000 wins by September of 2004. (I haven't been able to get a more updated record than that). Ricardo is 43, has won all but 151 of his races (as of 9-04) at his hometrack in Rio at the Gavea Racecourse, where they race only 208 days a year on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday! There are over 80 jockeys and apprentices at that track. He began riding in 1976 and in 1992-1993 he won 477 races. It is expected that he will break Pincay's record by September of 2007.

Sportswriters need to update their records and make note of this outstanding rider in their articles about leading jockeys.

You can check this out on jockeysroom.com and log onto his name under Brazilian jockeys.

Talking about the writers needing to check their facts or be more precise, check this article at the Bloodhorse, and notice a major mistake.

Hi Swaps, George,

Thanks for the update on Jorge Ricardo.

George, the article's a bit insipid but I must have missed the error.

Regards,

Pete

The writer says that Thunder Gulch would be the thirteen Belmont winner to sire a Belmont winner, but he has already sired a Belmont winner in Point Given, Thunder Gulch is already the twelfth one to do so.

Hi George,

Thanks, I missed that one.

Referencing Native Dancer as the male ancestor of Gulch is rather insipid. How many horses in the race have himin their pedigree?

Regards,

Pete
