Question: what is this bit called

Postby Heather » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:25 am

I am trying to figure out what a certain bit is called, and where to find one. It is a half cheek snaffle that has a "pedal" in the middle to prevent horses from swallowing their tonge.. We have a 2 horses that go in tongue ties and would like one of these bits instead of using tongue ties. I don't know what it is called, but it is basically a dexter ring that has a pedal in the middle. If you know what this is called and where I could find one your help is greatly appreciated.

I've heard it called a tongue depressor bit... I don't know if that is the correct or only term dor it... And you ought to be able to find it at any racing supply shop

I can picture the bit you are referring to - but don't know what it is called. We run in a bit that has a very similar use - a Serena's Song bit. It is like a snaffle with a "tongue depressor" of sorts in the middle. You can get it with a ring as well if your horse likes a regular ring bit. The depressor portion of the bit actually has slots though it. We thread a tongue tie through this and circle the jaw. This way you are holding the bit down against the tongue, but the horse doesn't have it's tongue in a noose.

Hmm, I've never seen a tongue tied to the depressor before... sounds like a good idea. I learn something new every day.

Tucumcari -

For horses that need their tongue tied but HATE feeling like it is tied, we have actually threaded the tongue tie through the small hole joining the snaffle in the middle of the bit then around the jaw. Horses can't work it off their tongue either.
