THE GREAT DR. FAGER

Postby louis finochio » Tue Dec 20, 2005 6:48 pm

DR. FAGER (USA) b. H. 1964--1976
Rough'N Tumble---Aspidistra, by Better Self

In 1978 Dr. Fager was voted HOY, Champion Handicap Horse, Champion Sprinter, and Champion grass horse.

Dr. Fager still holds he record for one mile 1:32.1 carrying 134 lbs.

Dr. Fager started 22 times 18/2/1 and earned 1,002642.

How many other TB won the Champion Sprinter and HOY to boot?

None, not even Dr. Fager. There has never been a PURE sprinter named HOY. There have been a couple of horses who've won the Sprint title IN ADDITION to other titles (like grass or one of the age categories), but never one whose only laurels came as a sprinter.

When he was racing I was caught up in the west vs. east thing and didn't appreciate what an incredible race horse he was. I was next to the walking ring at Hollywood when he ran out here and (I believe) they saddled him in the tunnel. When he came out it was like this equine tornado that could barely be contained. What an impressive animal. Died way too young. Like Native Dancer, I appreciated him far too late!

hi swaps 1955

You wrote "I was next to the walking ring at Hollywood when he ran out here and (I believe) they saddled him in the tunnel. When he came out it was like this equine tornado that could barely be contained."

I could sense the explosive energy of Dr Fager through your description...thanks for sharing your experience.

Their are very few TB that can run the last quarters of their races faster than their first quarters, Dr. Fager was one of those few. Thanks for the memories Dr. Fager.

He was a true freak of nature. I saw those numbers (forget which set they are now) that had Smarty Jones (love him but...), Ghostzapper (fast but HOW many lifetime starts?), etc. rated OVER Dr. Fager and I figured that writer/theorist must have lost their mind. Ghost might have been able to match Dr. Fager's speed but he'd probably have broken down before the finish! And I don't think Dr. Fager was the soundest creature around but he was sure tough.

Did he pass his ability on to his daughters and granddaughters?

Ummm, you guys both mean 1968, not 1978, right? I'm guessing he wasn't voted HOY two years after his death...

I know he sired some good ones but I'm not sure how many crops he got on the ground (and that was before the "super crop") before he died. He was only 12 or 14 when he died. 12 I think.

Dr. F's daughters

Postby Denise » Wed Dec 21, 2005 2:54 pm

Happy, how about one of Dr. F's best daughters, the great Killaloe, who produced Fappiano, who sired Unbridled?
And the Doc's sister, Ta Wee, wasn't too shabby a racemare or producer either....

Dr Fager was an EXCELLENT broodmare sire relative to how many daughters he got and in my opinion he's where his closely inbred descendant Quiet American (2x3 to Dr Fager) got his highly impressive ability in this area.

You know, when the time comes I highly recommend inbreeding to Dr Fager (if it's done the right way, of course!) as my research has shown the most successful inbreeding patterns being to VERY closely inbred high quality ancestors like In Reality (who was 3x3 to War Relic, who was in turn 3x3 to both Fairy Gold and Rock Sand).

Dr. Fager

Postby Richard » Wed Dec 21, 2005 6:03 pm

Dr. Fager, was a race horse, he loved to race. He was a plain brown horse
nothing particularly striking about him, but once he stepped onto the track
he began to strut his stuff. The show was on, he would strut and size up every horse that was there. They all knew he wanted a good race, he practicaly dared them,I'm not making this up,I was at all his New York
races, and I loved that horse and still do. When he ran, turned for home,
he would pin his ears back get extended and bust a gut to the wire. He tried so hard, he dug in, worked hard for it. When he made this move on the last turn the hair on the back of my neck stood out I could feel it, and damed if he did'nt make me cry every time.
When Dr. Fager was getting ready for his 4yo debut, he gave a public
exibition workout from the starting gate at Aquaduct between the 7&8th
race on the Wensday befor his race that Saturday. Wensday was barber
day, all the barbers were closed, and alot of them were at the track.
On that day, or any week day at that time, if you wanted a seat you had better get there at 12:00pm. or stand.
They put the starting gate on the finish line, he broke, and unseated
the jockey, the timer was running and so was Dr. Fager.
( I must pause and say all I could think about was what would he do
after the wire, would he get hurt? the poor outrider) back to the race
he set fast times, but he hugged the rail saved ground came to the turn for home, pinned his ears, extended and dug deep. the crowd stood up
and roared he dug deeper.crossed the wire eased himself turned and
pranced deliberately back into the winners circle and drank of the roare
that was constant. I was on the 2nd floor of the clubhouse, ran down to the rail of the circle, about 25ft from him, I looked him in the eye, and
him me wow................................................once upon a time
just had to share that.
