This is what the results say that the #2 horse "dueled while between foes on the turn, had the rail in upper stretch". The results sound like there were three horses trying for the same space at the same time around the turn.
The jockey is listed in the top 20 for the track (16th not sure the ranking system). His stats for this meet (Jul 1 - Sep 5) are 122 starts, 9 wins, 16 seconds, 21 thirds (the top jockey in same timeframe is at 351 starts). So it doesn't look like he's an inexperienced or bad choice based on his stats.

I just wrote because I was so upset that Gear It Up had been hurt, and that it seemed so meaningless, and that I had gotten so attached to him, that I wondered if I was too softhearted for this business. I just have to say that if he was being kicked all the time and had a sore ankle then he was very brave to go as fast as he did all the way up to third before he faded.
You're not too soft-hearted. Emotions are a GOOD thing!
I probably didn't need to go off on a jockey rant, but reading your post got me thinking about the jockey who threw a race for us because he was upset at our trainer for taking him off of another mount, and that fueled MY emotions! I don't have enough facts to really intelligently comment on your situation, but sometimes we make comments anyway...

Thanks Kami for that information.
It wouldn't really be typical of our operation to choose an inexperienced jockey and I'm sure they have worked with him before, so I'm not surprised by your info. Maybe he just screwed up this time. I kind of got the impression he got panicked by the bobble at the start and seemed to feel he must catch up as fast as he could. Yes the 2 horse had the rail by the stretch because Gear It Up then started to fade as they went round the turn, after having dashed up to third along the inside rail from the back of the field. It was during this dash up to third that he was getting kicked because presumably the 2 horse was being pressured from the outside also, as there were three that were vying for the same space.
No word today about his condition. I don't know how far Mountaineer is from Arlington Park, and whether there would be time for a thorough examination by the time Gear It Up got back. We are told the cuts will heal, and are not near any ligaments or tendons, but I am most worried about the ankle. I don't know what a warm ankle with pressure might mean - could it mean a fracture? or would he be lame if it was a fracture (apparently he is not showing signs of lameness)? If not, what might it be?
I suppose it's pointless to guess.
