Speed Dating won by 8 on the turf at Belmont yesterday, breaking her maiden in her third start.
Good friends own a share of her and have gifted me a percentage of their share--as they have listened to my advice on buying decisions. I liked this filly's tough structure and breeding, and gave them the green light.
I would have been very stressed if she kept losing so I'm RELIEVED!
The only thing that bothers me is that in her first 2 dirt starts, she didn't exactly bust a gut trying, and the last race she looked like she lost interest halfway through.
This time she was, according to chartspeak, "kept busy", and seeing the race replay I agree, but hey--if she's obedient, that's good--just wish she was more game.
Have any of you owned horses that got more interested as they got older?

Toccet, we've only ever had one horse, a filly bought as a yearling, that showed real precocious aptitude and maturity at age 2 (late summer/fall.)
Every other one, bought at sale or bred, has been later maturing in mind and body. The girls do seem to show more aptitude and interest earlier, but unless their bodies sync up with their minds (the one mentioned above was smaller and shorter coupled), you have to wait.
When the "light" finally goes on, it's a lot of fun. It sounds like Speed Dating appreciated the change of surface and woke up as a result.
Nearly all of ours, while competent on dirt, show greater energy and flourish on grass, based on pedigree, stride and training.

Even though she won by eight, she definitely was being asked and responded just enough. It was like the jockey was turning a volume knob on a stereo!
She didn't look enthused.
But not miserable either.
Now, the other two factors are that after her first race she bled,
and after the second they found a minor throat abcess.
So maybe this time she just finally felt well!

Thanks--there's another thread about her I started, because she has indeed
run and won again, on grass, against winners.
She's getting a month or so off in Ocala before shipping back up here to prepare for the NY grass season, I guess...
