Anybody at Oaklawn?

Postby Bedouwia » Sun Jan 04, 2009 6:45 am

A filly that I bred, Champagne Ridge, has had two works at Oaklawn and I hope she may get her first out soon when the meet begins this month. Her trainer is Donnie Von Hemmel. I would love to have any impressions from someone there on the grounds.

I think BDW goes to Oaklawn quite a bit.

I will be there in a week or two and can probably help you out. Logistics are holding me and the 5 I'm taking down there up.

I can PM you once I get down there...it won't be the first thing I run out an do though.

Thanks for the help. I am a very small breeder, so all my horses are like family. Work will make it just about impossible for me to get to Oaklawn myself although the thought keeps coming into my mind. A glimpse of a horse on a computer screen is just not the same as eyes on the ground.

glad to help, I'm the same way. I try to follow every one that I have bred and then make sure they are taken care of once their careers are over. It's going to get tougher now that our mare numbers have climbed to double digits this year.

Well, Champagne Ridge is entered for her first race next Friday. It's the 4th race, 51/2 furlongs, and she has post 3. This is a 20K maiden claiming race, so it seems like a good way to start. At least I should be able to watch it on HRTV. I noticed that she is the only Texas bred in the field -- so, I guess this is a big debute for a county girl.

Well, it was frustrating trying to watch on HRTV since the race was on tape delay -- I didn't really get a good look, since she broke a bit slow and then ended up 9th in a field of 12. Not surprisingly the camera tends to focus on those at the front of a race. At least she has had her first experience, but was a bit like a tourist out for a stroll. The filly that won by Stormy Atlantic was very impressive. I hope to see her improve next out.
