First 2 yr old starter

Postby Jenny » Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:54 pm

Ridgeway Pleasure is a 2 yr old filly we have for a client and she is having her first race this weekend. This is the first 2 yr old we have gotten to the races. The owner is thrilled. He has been racing for many years and has only had 2 others make it to the races as 2 yr olds.

She ran last :(
She did everything right went in the gate and broke well, but was slammed by both horses beside her and then got pulled up a couple of times, because the other horses were going all over the place! She stayed in her own lane and some of the others were going from lane 1 out to the 7 hole right in front of her, so the jockey had to reef her up a couple of times :( . So she lost ground and then just gave up. She seemed overwhelmed after the race. Poor baby. So she is at home now and has had lots of experience for next year. We are happy she got a start in and got over all of her issues, so she should have a early start as a 3 yr old.

Jenny,
It's clear from your description that you prepared her very well, so hopefully, she will move on from this experience and come back strong as a 3yo. The main thing is she came out of what sounded like a very green bunch okay. The hardest thing in this game is to know whether your horse likes to race, rather than just run, and they only way to find out, is to start them.
We have the 5th starter, a 2yo., from as many foals from our mare making her debut this week. Frankly, it's a big surprise to have a 2yo. from this family (later maturing bunch), so we'll see. :?:
