question on lip tattoos

Postby malosgirl » Sun Jan 07, 2007 8:20 pm

I know there has to be a letter defining the year of birth. Well how many numbers are supposed to be on the horses lip. Is there suppose to be like 5 numbers only or can there be less.

There can be less. Quarter horses and Standardbreds both have only four numbers, I think. Some very old TBs can have only four as well, before it was standardized to five.

well would about 15 years old count as old. Because mainly I see on my thoroughbreds tattoo 2781. I know there has to be a letter. My trainer said that he was either born in 1991 or 1992

If he was born in '91 there would be an S before the 2781, if '92 it would be a T. The exception is foreign born Thoroughbreds. I have a mare born in France and a stallion born in Argentina. Both were assigned US JC papers and numbers, starting with a "3".
