Churchill Downs- early morning etiquette

Postby Kari » Sun Nov 01, 2009 7:27 pm

Here's what I'd like to do, since I have friends now that live in Louisville: I'd like to show up one morning with my coffee and watch the morning works from the stands. I'm familiar with the track, gates, etc., but I have no idea how to go about doing this, or if I could even do it without being connected to someone on the backstretch. Any advice would be appreciated!

I believe it's not that informal. They are running a morning thing on Sundays right now

Training starts about 5am and runs until about 9am when there is a meet running (like now) and there is a morning break.

There is no public "access" without an escort. If you have a KY owner's license and know a trainer, you can possibly get in on the backside and there are stands there also. I like the backside best for the morning because you are in the hustle and bustle of the barns and watching the horses. The Derby Museum runs backside tours, you could call them and see how early they can run that for you. The museum itself is closed right now because it got horribly flooded and damaged in that storm a couple of months ago, but they are still running the tours.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Hunh. Times are a changin'! I remember being able to sit in the stands when I was a kid to watch the morning workouts. Sounds like they have a pretty sweet deal going on now-free coffee and donuts on Sunday mornings? I'll take it!

(Last time I was down there was 2 days before that storm. Pretty nuts turning on the tv and seeing 4 ft of water where you had just stood with dry feet!)
