information on Oscar Zee?

Postby wabadou » Sun Dec 04, 2005 7:08 am

What a wonderful site!
My daughter is leasing an older (15?) OTTB for Pony Club. He's a wonderful old guy and I'd love to find out more about his pedigree and or race/record. He is tattooed but it is difficult to read.
Thank you for any help :)

Oscar Zee

Thank you so much for the information! He is actually a year older than we thought, coming 17, but amazingly enough, still going strong.
Is there any way to tell how many years he raced? My guess would be 2 from the number of starts, or possibly 3.
Thanks again!!

Oscar Zee raced for three years with five starts as a two-year old and all but one of his races were sprints (less than a mile).
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Hi,

First of all, indeed Oscar will be 17 soon.

He won four races and it probably wouldn't be too hard to get at least one picture.

November 18, 1991 at Hawthorne Race Track, Chicago-area, IL

December 4, 1991 at Hawthorne again

April 20, 1992 at Sportsman's Park, Chicago-area

July 26, 1993 at Mountaineer Park, Wheeling-area, West Virginia

I would make my first attempts at the Hawthorne track, because they're still open and functioning as always.

Sportsman's is very near to Hawthorne, and I have a strong feeling that the track photographer at Hawthorne would have leads about getting the picture from Sportsman's, even though they're not racing at Sportsman's anymore.

I'm inclined to suggest saving the Mountaineer photo for last... in part because there is a very good chance they raced at night, and maybe the picture quality won't be as nice as those in the daylight. Yet maybe it will, and you'll be surprised.

Funny about Oscar Zee, he raced 18 times on dirt and had the four wins but didn't finish second or third at all. His lone second place finish was in his only grass race.

Let us know how you do.

Oscar Zee aka Ozzie :)

That does seem really odd....would like to see the company he was in for the wins vs the ones where he was out of the money. I remember getting race call records several years ago on another OTTB but can't remember where they came from. They were very enlightening as this horse raced well, won several allowances at Ellis then faded sharply in his next race, then out of the money and was found to have knee chips in both knees.

Does seem odd about Oscar Zee ( now known as Ozzie:). What would your gut be, soundness, attitude or just freakin no telling what, LOL??

He's a good guy, don't know much about his past, horrible feet but still going.
Thanks so very much for the information :)

Hi,

Oscar Zee took the winter of 1992/93 off (actually from July to April) and then returned in Chicago, raced poorly 4 times vs. Illinois-bred runners, and then was likely sold privately to the world's all-time winningest Thoroughbred trainer Dale Baird.

Oscar Zee then shipped to Baird's Mountaineer Park base in West Virginia where he raced 17 days after his last Chicago start. He was 2nd on turf that day before winning 1 1/2 months later in a $1500 claiming race.

He raced just twice more after that, showing very good early speed both times before finishing last in each. Final start was August 28, 1993 and it really is difficult to say what eventually brought on the end of his racing career.

My instinct says that because of his impressive early speed, that his feet were most sensibly the inspiration for the early end to his racing career. That is wild speculation on my part.

Oscar Zee race record

Postby wabadou » Thu Dec 08, 2005 7:24 pm

WOW! I went ahead and pulled his lifetime starts from equineline and I'm assuming that is probably what you were looking at?
Such a strange race record, as you point out. 19 starts, 4 wins and no place or show except for the lone turf place. Several races where he "stopped" or "did not finish".... attitude?? sore feet?? kinda makes you go hmmmmm....:)
He DOES have foot/hoof issues, the wonderful lady that we are leasing him from who took a chance on him 3 years ago for her own daughter for Pony Club/ lower level eventing despite ouchy feet and he worked out beautifully WITH lots of supplements and shoeing help:), she was actually advised against buying him due to his ouchiness. She was told that he "mechanically foundered" due to his "toes being allowed to get long" (perhaps he "mechanically foundered" while racing accounting for his early speed but inability to maintain due to ouchy feet? yes, wild speculation on my part, too but I am so intrigued!!) and he is only sound for riding now with shoes all around and wedge pads in front.
Amazingly enough, he had the cleanest legs I've seen for a 16 year old OTTB. No splints, swelling, windpuffs, nothing, tendons tight, etc. Perhaps he was engaging in some self preservation, lol!
I'd love to hear any more insights, he's a funny old guy and we have been offered the opportunity to own him. A gamble due to his age and some stiffness here and there but he is a great schoolmaster for the lower levels of dressage and horse trials:)
Thanks for all the information, I'd just lOVE to be able to find someone who may have worked with him and could shed even more information but after 10 + years since his last start, the chances are slim. I ( and my daughter:) am grateful to have found out this much :)
