Ever seen the mucous plug???

Postby TB Dreamin' » Sat Apr 28, 2007 5:27 pm

:? Hi all and congratulations to all the new babies and Momma's!!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has ever actually seen the mare pass the mucous plug??? In all my years of foaling mares, I never have, until today...I think...

My mare had some dime-sized whitish marks on her buttocks on either side of her tail, early this morning. Then, this afternoon, strings of white, mucous, were streaming from her vulva, on and off. I had never seen this before, called my vet, and he assured me that's what it was. There's still some coming out this evening.(my mare had some placentitis earlier, so that was my concern)

I thought that the plug came either w/the first stage of labor or simultaneously w/the water breaking, but my vet said that the mares can hold off foaling for a week after losing the plug.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks-
Amy

my mare had a pink greasy/sticky substance that was identified as the plug this year at about 3pm on tuesday and foaled thursday night at midnight. I had always heard if you were lucky enough to see the plug it was 24 hrs. :?

I have seen it before, as a white liquid/fluid but can't remember the exact details.

Good luck though!!!

Mucous plug

Postby TB Dreamin' » Sun Apr 29, 2007 9:56 am

Hi Ruffian,

Thanks-I, too, thought it was really lucky to see...but no luck, so far, on the 24 hour thing!!! (still waiting)

I was totally amazed that the "plug" slowly came out of my mare for at least 9 hours, off and on. This must be rare, otherwise for sure more people would see it!

And, on another note, who in the heck ever decided it should be called a "plug?" :? It was not plug-like in the slightest...

A man probably decided what to call it :)

Good luck with the mare! Hope all is well and she foals a healthy foal for you soon.[/u]

:D clh,

We think alike, sorry guys, but that's EXACTLY what I was thinking when I wrote that...

Still waiting on baby...she's pawed, she's gotten up and down, looked at her sides, rubbed her butt on stuff, etc., etc., and made me crazy...but no foal, yet...

Thanks for the well wishes!!!

She sounds like she is in early labor. Good luck!
