I'm plotting to sell some babies... and one of my "selections" was my fabulous filly out of Princess Omar.
She came down with pneumonia six days ago, we caught it. She had gotten as far as joint ill in one hock. So she got VERY aggressive treatment; IV catheter, IV Pfizerpen every six hours, another antibiotic every 24 hrs, etc. It was all gone the other night, fever down to 101 not artificially suppressed, joint ill gone, filly lively and bouncing off the wall... and walked under one of the fullish water buckets and dumped it all over herself.
Later, she was playing in the empty bucket, smacking her lips, so my thoughtful husband thought she must be thirsty -- even though there was a full bucket beside it and a mare with a full bag of milk nearby... he filled the bucket and the filly plunged her head in, snorted a lungful of water and died -- drowned. We tried everything, CPR, sucking the water out her nostrils.. she died in my arms.
I swear, even if I had rubber rooms, they would still find a way.

It Ain't Over Till the Hammer Falls
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
Oh, Madelyn!
You are so right!
It's amazing any of them make it to adulthood. So sorry!
And as for your thoughtful husband, this foal was going to find a way to die on you
, and thankfully the vet bills were not more prolonged in reaching the same result. Apparently the foal felt a need for drink as a symptom of its illness. You did not cause the death!
Trust me; I'm a doctor.

Foal
If I had to quess, I would say that the bacterial infection had progressed to her brain. The abcess or swelling of the brain caused the filly not to interact with her environment in a normal manner. It happens. Mary Syers
