Just When You Thought Things Were Good

Postby 20dourmdd » Wed Apr 04, 2007 5:30 pm

First time for everything!

Since the last time on the message board...when the two new foals were doing just fine...the sky fell down...the first foal develops colic due to mama being a milking machine...the second foal looks good, but emmune hemiglobin is too low...plasma has to be given. Vet has been to the farm six straight days, sometimes twice in the same day to check the foals.

The vet bills are going to be astronomical...more than the babies and mares are worth.

I am beginning to think hard and often about breeding anymore mares.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Hope the colic baby is doing okay? Did they give the other foal plasma or just antibiotics. Trust me - I know what you mean - we've thought about getting out of the business as well (See the thread on the our Jan Kee Sales and our a** kicking there) - but you never know - things may very well turn around and you do need to take care of what you bring into the world ... although I do know how frustrating it can get! Hang in there - hope the babies are doing better soon!

Sorry to hear about your babies. I hope they get better soon. I know it can be hard, last year I lost a filly and a couple months later I lost a mare that I had for 4 years. I was left with an orphaned filly that I had to bottle feed. I was lucky that I had a mare that fostered her.
