Hop to It foal by Vicar

Postby henthorn » Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:14 pm

My ten year old Bien Bien mare foaled a big beautiful dark bay/brown colt yesterday with lots of chrome at the Little River Farm near Versailles, KY. He was a little sluggish and didn't want to rise to his feet, but nursed greedily when forced to stand. They are watching him closely and today he has been getting around okay, but both rear legs are swollen. The vet checked him and drew some blood, started empirically on antibiotics until results are in. Apparently the colt seems to feel much better today than yesterday. I'm hoping it's just that he's a big baby, and probably strained his legs during delivery. Hop to It seems fine.

Updates to follow and hopefully good news and photos.

Our other little Vicar boy, Shake On It's cute little leaping chestnut colt from February posts, is at the same farm, and Bob was already planning to get me some pictures of that little rascal--Agent Red by Vicar.

S - I sure hope the little guy is okay! Please keep us posted okay?

I know you are worried but I also know you wouldn't have your babes anywhere that you weren't sure they weren't getting terrific care! One of my foals legs (all four) swelled (is that word?) up a day after he was born. They too put him on antibiotics and wrapped them and kept him on stall rest - blood work came back fine and he is doing well now. First thought he was allergic to mom's colustrum even though the tests were all okay. Hope he continues improving and glad that momma is doing well :)

We're cautiously optimistic, although he isn't well.

The farm owner says Hop waxed for several days before delivery, so could have wasted a lot of that good early colostrum that the foal needed. The white cell count is low, and IgG is pending; he thinks the baby will need a plasma transfusion to augment his natural defenses.

The baby is eating well, and there doesn't appear to be any localized problem at this time. He seems stiff in general and still swollen in his rear legs. He is being monitored carefully by the farm owner and the vet. They'll reevaluate today.

Hop to It seems fine.

Thoughts and prayers to you and the baby (and momma too). Keep us posted S. I'll be thinking of ya! I know how stressful it is when they aren't well and you can't be there to "see" what they are doing!!

Bob called me this morning to say that the colt received a plasma transfusion yesterday and that he is almost past his swollen legs problem. He is spunky and active, and can go out and play today. It's been miserable, cold, windy, and damp for the past few days, and that may have contributed to his soreness and stiffness. When the sunshine allows, he'll get us some photos.
